About Michele

Hi everyone, I'm Michele, a Medical student with extensive experience in perioperative and surgical nursing, proudly holding a First Class Honours Nursing degree. Several years ago, I embarked on a journey to advance my career by joining Medical School. My background in nursing has proven to be a significant asset in my academic pursuits. Having both the nurse's and doctor's perspectives has allowed me to comprehend the patient's care journey holistically. My profound passion for medicine, coupled with the knowledge acquired throughout my career, equips me to deliver concise and clear teaching and mentoring sessions. With the majority of my nursing career spent in the UK, I bring a wealth of experience. Fluent in both Italian (a great advantage with my solid grasp of Latin medical terms) and English, I am dedicated to fostering a comprehensive understanding of medical concepts.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I think I have always had Medicine inside me. My mother is an RGN and so I have been exposed to medical terminology and talks since I was just a little boy. When I left school, I decided to follow my mother's footsteps and so I joined Nursing School and I obtained my first class honours degree in Nursing Science (BSc). I worked as a perioperative practitioner for over ten years in the UK before deciding to join Med school, which I am 5 years in now. But since I was little, I have always enjoyed the process of teaching (I started with my little sister when she needed to learn some maths). I simply get enormous satisfaction from guiding my students towards their life goals. It just fills my heart with joy. It is extremely rewarding.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I currently teach any Medical and Nursing (clinical) subject, ranging from Internal Medicine to Psychiatry. I particularly focus on the clinical aspects of these subjects, but I also cover the theory to allow my students to build up their knowledge. Human Biology is also another subject I teach, which falls into the pre-clinical studies. I do not particularly like to discuss any other preclinical subjects, such as Chemistry, Physics, etc.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Apart from my amazing mother, I have been lucky enough to come across some great practitioners out there, both colleagues and Professors. I can say that they inspired me to become the professional that I am today and, likely, the Doctor I will be tomorrow.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

First and foremost: LISTENING. Most tutors, mentors and teachers, both online and in Universities, do not listen to their students. They have all the valuable questions that they need to satisfy their curiosity. So, listening to them is gold.
Having FUN is also extremely important when learning. It has been scientifically proven that we learn more, better and easier when we have fun. Like children who learn while playing, adults are not that different. Having fun, using infographics and memorable mnemonics, cartoons and exercises as well as interactive tools make a huge difference in the student's learning path.
Patience. A tutor must be patient and ready to repeat when something was not understood, maybe trying to tackle that very same concept from a different angle.
And, finally, a good tutor must be humble and yet knowledgeable. I always start from the assumption that I can learn a lot from my students.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

During a physiology lecture on liver functions, a professor once shared an amusing analogy to help students grasp the concept of detoxification. The professor likened the liver to a superhero in the body, dubbing it "Liverman." According to the whimsical narrative, Liverman's mission was to patrol the bloodstream and neutralize harmful substances, transforming them into harmless byproducts.
In this playful scenario, the professor described how Liverman would skillfully navigate through the bloodstream, disarming toxins with precision and efficiency. The analogy not only brought a touch of humor to the complex topic of detoxification but also left a lasting impression on the students, making the concept of liver functions more memorable.
From that day on, I always referred to the liver as "Liverman," adding a dash of superhero flair to their understanding of this vital organ.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

The complexity of the subjects I teach and the vast amount of information available in an ever-changing field such as medicine can be a little difficult to handle at times. Staying up to date is the best way to provide the best quality of teaching.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

My passion is Medicine, and Education is part of it. I enjoy both the same.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

Detailed lectures tailored for the student. Fun environment and friendly approach. Ongoing support (even after the lesson hours): students can contact me anytime for clarifications. Passion for tutoring, knowledge and applied clinical practice. Over 10 years of experience in the medical field and two University Degrees. Super Passion-driven!
