About Matthew
Throughout my time in school the imparting of topical and significant information through the digestible format of story-telling has been of the utmost interest to me. Through the various stories that I have read I have accumulated a well-rounded understanding of the world I live in, something that continually inspires me to further my knowledge through more reading. This passionate accumulation of knowledge, I feel, is often neglected as English is taught in a mechanical manner that insists on the mundane repetition of the tight restrictions of the dreaded mark scheme, which although important, often clouds the ability for many students to see beyond the rigid formalities of literary analysis. My desire in tutoring is to hopefully inspire the realisation that English is not a hindrance that must be fought through to its completion and complete abandonment following GCSEs but rather an opportunity to temporarily abandon the mechanical certainty of other subjects, albeit to an ironically limited degree, and have fun.

I am flexible with regards to exam boards as long as I am given a bit of time to familiarise myself with the texts that the tutee will be working with in order to better direct my interpretations of each text and avenues for improvement.
I will be as flexible and accommodating as possible. Most exam struggle comes as a result of time management and a lack of understanding about what the mark scheme requires rather than the difficulty of the text which can be resolved with practice essays. My lessons will be targeted toward building a fundamental understanding of how to compose an essay and a close observation of the specification requirements. However, whilst this may be the primary focus of the lessons, I will also dedicate time to addressing the themes of each text in order to provide the opportunity for my students to get a personalized and in-depth understanding of the actual content of their essays rather than simply repeating what the teachers state as the correct points, a phenomenon I have often found to be a common one that usually hinders the productivity of essays rather than aiding it. Thus, I will ensure that I will ask questions (in response to practice essays) that will aid the sophistry of the argument and aid in the application of technical terms to bolster the understanding of both the technique of literary analysis and the text itself.
