I teach beginning, intermediate, and advanced violin, viola, and recorder students. Beginning students learn good playing position with both the right and left hands through the use of exercises. They can use any method although I am most familiar with the Suzuki and Essential Elements books. For a beginning violin or viola student, I demonstrate how to hold the bow with a pencil and will ensure that they master a bow hold using a pencil before actually holding the bow. Intermediate and advanced violin and viola students will often tell me what music they are working on, and I will give them fingerings and help them with concepts such as intonation, rhythm, bow distribution, and good sound. I reinforce good playing position and encourage them to practice using the metronome. I encourage all of my students to practice scales in order to help their intonation. I help recorder students by teaching them how to cover each hole correctly, give them breathing exercises, and demonstrate how much and what type of air is needed to make a good sound on each note, especially the low notes.

Ms. Amy has helped me prepare for various auditions including Region Orchestra. I have made region the past 2 years in a row with the help of Ms. Amy. She really made me understand the importance of fine tuning and the rhythm for any piece we worked on. Ms. Amy has allowed me to gain more confidence in my playing and earn a seat as Concertmaster at the high school I attended. I was able to pay attention to every detail in a piece of music where Ms. Amy guided me in really capturing the essence of a piece. I never felt I was playing bad, but rather I was encouraged by Ms. Amy to take the time to slow down a piece so that I would not rush and by doing so I was improving my playing over time. Ms. Amy was flexible with my schedule which I much appreciated as I had a heavy coursework to do for school. I feel that Ms. Amy has made me a better musician and I will be able to tackle any piece of music I may receive.
Very informative and friendly cant wait to work with her she seems to be a great fit for me and she's very kind and seems to have alot of patience
Amy has exceeded our expectations of a viola teacher. She has high standards while still being a source of encouragement. My son looks forward to his lessons and being stretched musically by Amy. She is also an excellent communicator. We recommend her services.
What I like most about Amy’s studio is her style of teaching. She is a lovely combination of extremely kind and patient but also technically exacting. I have made such huge strides in my playing. She is absolutely the best violin teacher I’ve ever had.
If you are serious about the violin or viola, Ms. Pikler is teacher for you.Amy is an outstanding teacher and musician! She has helped my teenaged son improve his technique and prepare for various auditions. She is very patient and attentive to the student’s needs.
