About MJ
I became a singer AND a (drum kit) drummer as a young boy, then progressed to jazz band drummer and lead Tenor in performing choir in high school. I eventually combined singing and drumming when I entered the world of traditional African drumming while living in Los Angeles, studying and performing alongside a Yoruba master drummer and ceremonialist, learning a variety of traditional songs in Yoruba (and some Afro-Cuban versions). This is the lineage of Babatunde Olatunji, who was the Godfather of African Music in the West and revered around the world (now deceased). I became a leading Drum Circle facilitator in L.A. for many years, leading up to founding my own band Hamsa Lila, a major West Coast touring band in the World Fusion genre (2001-2018). We headlined major festivals all over the Western USA, and had a chart-topping album in the mid-2000's. I have recorded and/or performed with Michael Franti, String Cheese Incident, Dirtwire, Simrit, Ozomatli, Olatunji, and Ernest Ranglin.
