About Peter
Biologist with experience in teaching through open and distance learning modes for over 33yrs . Taught in top high schools ,colleges and university levels. Specialist in Botany , Zoology and Biology of wild life conservationHe has previously taught Biological sciences in various secondary schools like Alliance High school (5yrs) and Teacher training colleges in Kenya for example, Kagumo Teachers college and Kenya Science Teachers College. Prof. Keiyoro is a consultant in the area of ODeL and science curriculum development and has worked with several international and local institutions such as Kenya institute of curriculum development ,Kenyatta University, University of Botswana, Open University of Tanzania, Kenya Education Management Institute and College of Health sciences (UoN) .He been consulted as a curriculum developmemt consultant /expert and key trainer of Traditional Herbal Medicine practitioners in Kenya; a World Bank project on Medical Plants management and conservation Project - for three years (2011 to 2013). Prof. Keiyoro has attended and contributed in several international conferences and seminars in the areas of Global Burden of Diseases, eLearning (OdeL) and Biology of environmental conservation in various countries including; USA, Israel, Kenya, Botswana, Tanzania, Zambia, Senegal, Ethiopia, Namibia, Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire and Benin. Prof. Keiyoro also contributed to the current education reforms in Kenya as a Co-Chair of National education task force in 2011/2012, tasked with aligning education in Kenya with vision 2030 and constitution 2010 whose recommendations are now guiding the current Competency Based Education system reforms in Kenya and Basic education act 2012.Apart from being among the developers of the first ever ODel taught university degrees in Kenya and East African region he also founded and steered the first ever Open, Distance and e-learning science based and health sciences(PG-STI) degree/diploma programs in East African Region and possibly in Africa.. Prof Keiyoro has continued since 2015 to collaborate in research with University of Washington, Seattle- USA in the studies of Global burden of diseases and co- published in several high impact journals. Hence ,due to his compassion in studies in global burden of diseases , he initiated scientific research in Burden of Disease on Tungiasis ( a disease caused by Tunga penetrans /Jigger flea) among school age children in resource poor communities in Kenya, the case of Murang’a County, ( an on-going project since 2007). Closely working with Prof Walter Mwanda (as co-supervisor) of College of Health Sciences (University of Nairobi) Prof Keiyoro co-supervised and produced the first ever Ph. D. studies on Tungiasis in Kenya and probably the second in the world. To date he has supervised to completion eight Ph.D.’s and 37 master’s degrees. As a contribution to the society/community and educationist he is a co-founder of The Green Garden schools in Kenya which are models and centres of Competency Based Education system which are outstanding institutions of basic educational centres in Kenya todayion to the society/community and as an educationist he co-founded The Green Garden schools in Kenya which are models and outstanding institutions of basic educational centres in Kenya today. Currently, he is studying “the digital divide in Science education sector and sustainable interventions during and beyond covid-19 in Kenya”.
