About Athanasios
DMA pianist and pedagogue with over a decade of teaching experience, research on performance anxiety, and recitals ranging from harpsichord to the modern instrument.
I hold a Doctor of Musical Arts in Piano Performance from the University of Maryland and a Master of Musical Arts in Piano Pedagogy and Performance from the University of Macedonia. I have taught since 2014, privately and at university, in applied lessons and in the classroom.
I perform as a soloist and as a chamber musician, and I play early keyboards as well as the modern piano. Moving between harpsichord, fortepiano, and the instrument this music ended up on has made me question a good deal of received wisdom about how it should sound. My repertoire runs from the eighteenth century through contemporary music.
A lot of my playing life has been spent with other musicians rather than alone — singers, instrumentalists, chamber ensembles, opera rehearsal rooms. Playing with other people is how I learned to listen, and it is still where my ear is sharpest.
Teaching came to me through training rather than by default. Alongside performance, my degrees are in pedagogy, and my doctoral research examined why capable pianists come apart under pressure — the question of how people actually learn and hold up at the keyboard is the one I keep returning to. I also teach music theory and aural skills at university level.

I teach piano driven by a deep love for music and a desire to help students find their own expressive voice. My approach goes beyond technique and repertoire to include musical understanding through listening, analysis, and theory — because most difficulties at the piano turn out to be about hearing before they are about the hands.
I tailor lessons to each student's interests, pace, and learning style. Technique is never a separate subject: choices of fingering, articulation, and pedaling come from what the music asks for, so the work makes sense to you rather than arriving as a set of rules. How to practice is part of every lesson, since that is where most progress is won or lost.
I create a friendly, open environment with informal communication that encourages curiosity and a sense of security — especially helpful for children and for adults who feel they are starting late. I enjoy setting goals together from the first lesson, but I also value a relaxed approach that keeps the joy of making music in view.
If you are preparing for an exam, an audition, or a performance, we plan backwards from the date and treat playing under pressure as something you can train rather than something you either have or don't.
My aim is self-directed development, confidence, and above all a lasting love of the piano.

I studied with Athanasios for a year at the University of Maryland, College Park, for my piano performance minor. Athanasios is very passionate about his teaching. He is very dedicated to helping students work through technical challenges and refine the details. Whether it takes five minutes to fix a minor issue or the entire lesson to break down a difficult passage, he brings the same level of patience and focus. I highly recommend him to anyone looking to improve their playing!
I've been taking piano with Athanasios for a couple years and it's been great! He is very patient, helps me find music I'd be interested in, and has a strong focus on technique and music theory. I'm learning how to read music faster and play songs I enjoy!
