About Emmett
Hi, I’m Emmett, a Physics and Astronomy graduate with a strong passion for mathematics, science, and helping students develop confidence in subjects that can initially seem intimidating.
I hold a B.S. in Physics and Astronomy and have hands-on research experience in experimental nuclear physics, as well as experience mentoring students in physics. My background has given me a strong foundation in mathematics and the physical sciences, from algebra and trigonometry through calculus, physics, and astronomy.
I believe learning mathematics and physics is a lot like learning a musical instrument: it takes practice, consistency, and, most importantly, creativity. I myself am a drummer! There is rarely only one way to approach a difficult problem. Instead of teaching students to simply memorize formulas or follow a set of steps, I want them to develop a strong framework of methods, mathematical techniques, and problem-solving strategies that they can draw from when faced with something unfamiliar.
My goal is for problem-solving to eventually become a natural flow. By learning how to recognize what a problem is asking, identify the tools available to them, and work through different algebraic approaches, students can begin to diagnose their own path forward. I guide students through this process rather than simply giving them the answer, so that over time they become more independent, confident, and adaptable problem solvers.
I work with middle-school and high-school students in mathematics, including pre-algebra, Algebra I and II, geometry, trigonometry, precalculus, and introductory calculus. I also teach high-school physics and astronomy, including introductory mechanics, energy and momentum, waves, electricity and magnetism, and foundational astronomy and astrophysics.
Whether a student needs help catching up in class, preparing for an exam, strengthening their mathematical foundation, or exploring physics and astronomy beyond the standard curriculum, I aim to create a supportive and focused learning environment where they can ask questions, make mistakes, and genuinely understand the material.
Ultimately, I want my students to leave a lesson with more than the ability to solve the problems we worked on together. I want them to have the confidence and problem-solving framework to look at a new problem and think, “I know how to start.”

My approach is centered around building a strong conceptual foundation before moving into more difficult problems. I explain ideas in straightforward language, work through examples step-by-step, and then have students take the lead as they become more comfortable with the material. I encourage students to ask questions and make mistakes during lessons because understanding where a mistake comes from is often more valuable than simply being given the correct answer.
I also try to connect mathematics and physics to real-world examples whenever possible. My background in physics and astronomy gives me a perspective that allows me to show students how the mathematics they learn in school becomes a tool for understanding the physical world.
What a Typical Lesson Looks Like
A typical lesson is adapted to the student's current class, goals, and level. Before any lesson I would ask the parents to send recent/current homework assignments and exams.
1. Quick review
We begin by reviewing previous material or discussing anything the student found difficult since our last lesson.
2. Introduce or explain the concept
I explain the new concept using intuitive examples and visual reasoning before introducing more complicated equations or procedures.
3. Guided practice
We work through problems together. I demonstrate the first examples, then gradually have the student take over while I provide guidance when needed.
4. Independent problem solving
The student attempts problems independently so I can identify what they understand and where additional explanation is needed.
5. Wrap-up
We review the main ideas from the lesson, identify anything that should be practiced further, and establish what to focus on next.

What Sets Me Apart:
My background allows me to approach mathematics from the perspective of someone who actually uses it as a scientific tool. I earned a B.S. in Physics and Astronomy and gained research experience as a Research and Lab Assistant at the Center for Frontiers in Nuclear Science at Stony Brook University. I have also served as a physics mentor and have previous experience teaching students through music and youth tennis instruction.
Because of this, I want students to see mathematics and physics as more than a collection of formulas to memorize. My goal is to help them develop the reasoning skills needed to approach unfamiliar problems confidently.

My lessons are intended primarily for **middle-school and high-school students**, whether they need help catching up, want additional practice alongside their regular classes, are preparing for an exam, or simply want to explore mathematics, physics, or astronomy beyond their school curriculum.
I can adapt lessons to students who need foundational support as well as students who are looking for a greater challenge.
