I believe learning should be engaging, enjoyable, and tailored to each student's needs. My teaching methods combine clear explanations with interactive techniques to make even the most challenging topics easy to understand and remember.

A typical lesson starts with a quick review of previous concepts, followed by an easy-to-follow explanation of new topics, using real-life examples, visuals, and short activities to deepen understanding. I ensure plenty of practice with targeted exercises and end each session by summarising key points, leaving time for questions and quick quizzes to reinforce learning.

I take pride in creating a supportive, motivating environment where students feel comfortable to ask questions, learn from mistakes, and grow in confidence.
Every student learns differently — and I adapt my methods to match their pace, making sure they not only learn but truly enjoy the journey.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

My interest in science began during my school years when I was fascinated by how the human body works and how tiny cells and microorganisms influence our everyday lives. That curiosity led me to study Biochemistry, complete a PhD, and spend several years teaching at university level. Over time, I realised that I enjoyed helping individual students even more than lecturing large classes. Private tutoring allows me to understand each student's strengths, identify where they struggle, and adapt my teaching to suit their learning style. Seeing a student go from "I don't understand this" to "I can do it on my own!" is the most rewarding part of my work.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Science to students of different ages and curricula, including the Scottish Curriculum, GCSE, and A-Level. I enjoy explaining difficult concepts using simple language and real-life examples. In Biology, I particularly enjoy genetics, human physiology, microbiology, biotechnology, and biochemistry because they help students understand the world around them. In Mathematics, I love problem-solving and showing students that maths is logical rather than something to fear. Even topics that students usually find challenging become enjoyable when explained step by step, so I genuinely enjoy teaching every part of my subjects.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Yes. I was fortunate to learn from teachers who were passionate about their subjects and always encouraged questions. They never made students feel embarrassed for making mistakes. Their patience, kindness, and enthusiasm inspired me to become the kind of teacher who creates a comfortable environment where students feel confident asking questions and learning at their own pace.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

A good tutor needs patience, strong subject knowledge, excellent communication skills, and the ability to adapt to different learning styles. Every student is unique, so one teaching method does not suit everyone. A tutor should also be encouraging, organised, and able to build confidence. I believe that helping students believe in themselves is just as important as teaching the syllabus.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

One of my favourite memories is helping a student who believed they were "bad at maths." They struggled with basic algebra and had lost confidence after repeated poor test results. Instead of rushing through the syllabus, we focused on understanding each concept step by step. Within a few months, the student not only improved their grades but also started enjoying maths. Watching their confidence grow reminded me that success often comes from the right guidance rather than natural talent.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or are still facing in your subject?

Science and mathematics can sometimes appear overwhelming because many concepts build on previous knowledge. During my own studies, I learned that consistency and practice were far more important than memorising information. As a teacher, one of my ongoing challenges is finding new and engaging ways to explain complex topics so that every student, regardless of ability, can understand them. This challenge motivates me to keep learning and improving my teaching methods.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

Teaching is definitely my greatest passion. I enjoy making difficult topics simple and helping students become independent learners. Beyond teaching, I have a strong interest in lifelong learning and educational creativity. I enjoy designing worksheets, creating interactive lessons, and finding real-world examples that make learning meaningful and enjoyable.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P)?

I combine strong academic qualifications with years of teaching experience and a genuine passion for helping students succeed. I don't just teach lessons—I build confidence, develop problem-solving skills, and encourage curiosity. My classes are patient, interactive, and personalised to each student's needs. Whether a student is aiming for top grades, preparing for exams, or simply trying to overcome a difficult topic, I am committed to supporting them every step of the way and making learning an enjoyable experience.
