About Mohamed
Sir:
It is Me Mohamed S. Solieman, University of Leeds- UK. I am writing to apply for Jobs with you. I am originally fro Egypt and my native language is ARABIC. I am currently working at University of Leeds, UK since 2008 and mange two projects at University of York, UK since 2013. My doctoral work was on the edicts of Roman Prefects in Egypt, edicts based around the Roman rule which engages with the contemporary government and political world under the Roman Emperors at Ain Shams University, EGYPT.
I would like to be considered for the above position and hope to demonstrate how much I could bring to it. My research and teaching interests fit extremely well with the requirements of this post and with existing members of staff regarding Arabic Language. I have extensive teaching experience in the department of Classics at university of Assiut, Leeds and York, most of it focused on Ancient History. My work provides a useful link between Greek World and Roman East in the department, encouraging research and teaching collaborations.
As I said above, I am from Egypt, which is similar to the UK but also very different. I have worked and travelled extensively in Europe, Asia and Northern Africa.
Currently, through my son’s school and also teaching at the Universities I have met people from African Countries, Iraq, Italy, Greece and USA.
I’m a Muslim and have many friends at the Leeds Grand Mosque from all over the world, all with Islam in common. I also have friends who are Jewish and Christian. The cultural differences are vast and I am aware that there are considerations and respect needing to be observed when speaking to people from different backgrounds. E.g My Saudi Arabian friends are closed to contact to people they don’t know, whereas we are very open to meeting everyone.
As a lecturer working with students I am often required to give advice and information. They will come to my office and I will talk and listen to them. If there is a problem I will try and find a variety of solutions to best sort this out. I am able to draw on my own experiences and the experiences of others to assist students with problems.
Again while teaching I have to be both confidential and impartial. I am responsible for my students, who will come to me with problems and issues. I maintain confidence with anything they tell me and keep their personal files secure in locked cupboards and password enabled databases. I am impartial when presented with a question and will often empower the student to find out the answer, checking first what research they have put in.
I offer appropriate support to overseas students who often present to me with an issue relating to missing home or sometimes a difficulty around living in the UK. I listen, support them and give them some advice from my own experience of living here. They are welcome to come back if they still feel upset or unsatisfied later on.
As a lecturer, I often analyze and understand the work of others and have many years experience of delivering seminars and lectures to groups of students. Having lived in a few different countries, I have also had to deal with day to day living dealing with different bureaucracy and understanding information has been key. As above I am good at helping others by communicating what is needed to respond to written information and supporting them with this.
I am working as translator and interpreter from Arabic to English and from English to Arabic through many projects around UK since 2008 as shown in my CV.
I have 10 years' teaching experience on teaching in Arabic and English on the following modules:
2007-2014 Fundamentals of Archaeology;
Archaeology Field methods;
Introduction to Heritage and Culture;
Historical Preservation;
Introduction to Archaeology ;
Introduction to Art History (Spring 09);

History of Egypt under the Roman Rule
Ancient Greek History.
Summer 2005-Fall 2006
History of Art;
Egyptian art and architecture;
Ancient Greek History;
Roman History;
Museology and Museum studies;
Archaeology of Hellenistic and Roman Egypt;
History of Egypt in the Greek and Roman periods;
Civilization of Egypt in the Greek and Roman periods;
2004 Undergraduates Seminars on the Assimilation of Greek and Egyptian arts and traditions in Egyptian History, the Greek and Imperial Roman eras.
As required I would be happy to contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate modules of both a research-led and a methodological nature.
My SCHOLARLY interests range widely, from the history of Ancient Rome, Roman Empire, the East under Roman Role, and the Greek World. I plan to research the new Historical expression “Propaganda” in both east and west ancient world. In addition, I hope to carry my interests in both Seleucid and Ptolemaic Kingdoms. The conventional divide between the two periods too often results in oversimplifications--imputing, say, a gritty materialism to The Ptolemaic Empire and a serene formalism to modernist writing. I believe I can help students see not only the ruptures, but the continuities between them.
My teaching philosophy reflects my interests in collaborative authorship. Instead of the "full frontal teaching" method of large lectures of autocratic seminars, I prefer student-centered teaching that encourages learning by both students and teachers. I favor classroom dynamics that permit dialogue and foster a degree of student input as to curricula and grading criteria. And I like students to think about the class as a community. This means that in both composition and literature classes, I have students spend a fair amount of time in smaller groups in which they not only talk and think together, but write together. In keeping with this emphasis on process, I have used the portfolio grading method in my WRITING COURSES, and have been pleased by enthusiastic student reactions. I would be happy to send class syllabi and student evaluations on request.
I have enclosed a copy of my curriculum vitae and a Teaching, research and service philosophy. I will gladly provide any other supporting materials upon request.
I would be grateful for the opportunity to demonstrate my capabilities further at interview. I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Mohamed S. Solieman
