About Deron

I am a patient, encouraging chess instructor who enjoys helping young players build confidence and discover the fun of chess.

I currently teach three private students between the ages of 5 and 13. Previously, I taught up to 15 students weekly at Hillside Elementary through the Champions after-school program. My experience includes creating a curriculum, providing individual and group instruction, and assessing students’ understanding and progress.

I create a welcoming environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, learning from mistakes, and celebrating their improvement. I tailor my coaching to each student’s personality, interests, and pace.

About the lesson

My lessons combine instruction, interactive puzzles, and practice games to make learning chess engaging and enjoyable.

For beginners, we cover piece movement, board setup, safe moves, and basic checkmates. For developing players, we explore tactics, opening principles, piece coordination, and how to turn a strong position into a clear plan.

I begin by assessing each student’s understanding, then tailor lessons to their strengths and areas for improvement. During practice games, we discuss the reasoning behind moves so students learn to think independently.

Lessons are available in person or online.

Deron's response
It was an absolute pleasure meeting Liz and working with Declan! Liz was punctual, welcoming, attentive, and an excellent communicator throughout the entire process.

Declan is a bright, respectful, and highly coachable young man with a solid understanding of chess. He was engaged, receptive to feedback, and a genuine pleasure to teach. I would gladly welcome the opportunity to coach him again anytime. Highly recommend!

It is with great pleasure I write this letter of recommendation for Deron Burks . Deron and myself have been playing chess for many years dating back to the early 2000s about 20+ years or so.
I have been knowing Deron for 37 years and he is very knowledgeable and would be capable of teaching anyone entry level and above how to become a strategic chess player. I will also add that more importantly Deron would make the game exciting and fun to learn. I would highly consider Deron Burks as a Chess Tutor.
