About Aishah

As a progressive educationalist, my philosophy centers on empowering students to become self-sufficient, lifelong learners. I believe in fostering a supportive and inclusive classroom environment where every student's unique talents and needs are recognized and addressed through differentiated and hands-on instruction. For over 10 years, I have translated this belief into practice by developing and implementing innovative, project-based curricula that not only improve academic outcomes but also cultivate critical thinking and collaboration skills. My commitment extends beyond the classroom to mentoring fellow educators and collaborating with parents and administrators to build a strong, supportive learning community that inspires a genuine love of learning.

Pre-lesson: Setting the stage (5 minutes)

A quick, friendly catch-up: The lesson begins with an informal warm-up to establish a comfortable, low-pressure atmosphere. Ask about the student's week, a recent holiday, or something interesting they saw online.

Choose a relevant topic: Select a conversational topic that aligns with the student's interests and goals, which you can determine from a pre-lesson survey. The goal is to maximize their engagement. Example topics could include:

Travel and holidays: Their last trip or where they'd go with unlimited time.

Hobbies: What they like to do in their free time.

Technology: How has it changed their life?

Work life: What they enjoy or find challenging about their job.

Core conversation: The main event (30 minutes)

Start with easy questions: Begin with a general question about the topic to get the conversation flowing. For example, if discussing travel, ask, "What was the most memorable trip you've ever taken?".

Deepen the discussion with follow-up questions: Use follow-ups to encourage more detailed responses and create a natural dialogue. For example, "What made that trip so special?" or "Do you prefer a detailed itinerary or being spontaneous?".

Teach and practice new vocabulary: As the student speaks, note down new words or phrases that arise naturally from the conversation. Briefly explain them in context, have the student repeat them for pronunciation practice, and encourage them to use the new vocabulary immediately.

Provide gentle error correction: Focus on a few key errors related to a specific grammar point rather than correcting everything. This makes feedback manageable and prevents the student from feeling self-conscious. For instance, if they consistently misuse the simple past tense, gently model the correct form in your response.

Maintain momentum: Keep the conversation moving forward by "passing the ball" and encouraging the student to ask questions back. This prevents the lesson from feeling like an interview.

Utilize screen-sharing (optional): For visual learners, you can share a picture related to the topic. For example, if discussing cooking, show a picture of a complicated recipe and ask them to describe the process.

Wrap-up and feedback (5 minutes)

Recap and review: Briefly go over the main points discussed and the key vocabulary or phrases you introduced.

Summarize progress: Affirm the student's accomplishments by mentioning specific phrases or ideas they expressed well.

Provide actionable homework: Assign a small, relevant follow-up task. For example, "Write a short paragraph about your dream vacation using the new vocabulary we learned".
