About Julia

One of my hobbies is reading, specifically contemporary literature. I enjoy writing as a form of creative expression, as well as a way to take a break from writing essays and research papers all the time at school.

I understand firsthand that writing can be challenging, especially when it comes to organizing ideas, developing an argument, or navigating the expectations of different forms of writing. However, I believe that with the right guidance and teaching approach, writing becomes a skill that anyone can improve. Whether it is analyzing literature, writing an essay, or conducting research, there are techniques, structures, and methods that can make the process much more approachable.

In many ways, academic writing, particularly essays and research papers, can come down to a science: once you understand how to develop a thesis, structure an argument, incorporate evidence, and communicate your ideas clearly, the process becomes far less intimidating.

I work with Big Brothers Big Sisters Toronto, where I help my mentee study primarily in English, as she is a young ESL student. I have also completed a year in journalism studies, which has greatly improved my reading and writing comprehension of articles and research papers. Taking creative writing, I can help with storytelling, poetry, songwriting, and other forms of creative expression. I know MLA, APA, and Chicago citation styles. I can also aid students with comprehension of classic and modern literature, how to develop a thesis, and how to decipher and annotate all kinds of literature, including research papers.
For lessons, I prioritize working with students on their current assignments, projects, and lessons to ensure they understand the material while developing the skills to approach similar tasks independently in the future. My teaching techniques include breaking down complex concepts into manageable steps, reading and annotating texts together, identifying key arguments and themes, brainstorming ideas, and providing guidance throughout the writing process. For ESL students, I emphasize vocabulary development, reading comprehension, sentence structure, and clear written expression in an approachable and supportive learning environment.
I can work with students from kindergarten to grade 12 to help in any way with reading and writing comprehension.
