About Ross James
A positive and patient BSc graduate & Student Ambassador who became the first student co-host in the Scottish Association of Marine Science (SAMS) podcast. My creativity and skills in writing, pronunciation, vocabulary, fluency, and conversational "agility" have been showcased in the websites and social media posts of the University of Highlands and Islands (UHI).
Before my degree, I had worked as a tutor for Tutorful where I taught English, Mandarin and GCSE Biology to both children and Adults. My goal in life is to edify and enlighten, and I love telling people what I've learnt.
As a mixed kid who was born in Edinburgh then raised in Hong Kong, I had the privilege to become a native English speaker fluent in Cantonese and Mandarin. Therefore, this is perfect for those who have a Chinese background with a desire to speak like a native

PROOFREADING
My experience in writing has earned me the opportunities to help people proofread their own. I cover documents such as:
*Academic writing - secondary, undergrad, and graduate PhD level writing
*Business proposals, website copywriting, emails, cover letters and more...
Not only do I check for grammatical, punctuational and style inconsistencies, I also add my own nuanced perspective, suggestions on better word choice and phrasing, on top of doing extra background reading on your topic.
THE LESSON
My main strengths and goals for my students are:
*Increasing vocabulary range and guiding comprehension
*Improving conversational flow
*Building Language confidence and creativity
These skills will help you communicate effectively in English
I will provide level-appropriate and relevant articles to read and interpret together, based on your interests of course! During the comprehension section, the grammar, pronunciation and style of writing will be discussed and explored.
My lessons will end in a conversational game that will challenge your ability to think, banter, and even rhyme!
Lessons are 30 minutes long
My lessons are perfect for beginners, as well as intermediate speakers who want to refine their command over the English language. That being said, my lessons can be catered to any demographic with a willingness to learn. (Children will have more structured and activity-oriented lessons; Adults are expected to suggest areas where they would like improvement on)

Perfect! Ross was Ruoyu's tutor, one of my PhD students. Being bilingual, English and Chinese, Ross helped Ruoyu a lot with preparation for his VIVA voce, working together as a team and encouraging him at every step to boost his self-confidence. Ross understood Ruoyu's needs, his weaknesses and his aims, which he accomplished in a very short time. I emphatically recommend Ross as an English tutor and oratory/public speaking coach.
