About Ryan
(Please feel free to reach me at (concealed information)). Hi there! I am a math PhD doing research in machine learning and physics. I completed my undergraduate degree in physics and my graduate degree in math and statistics. My academic background has given me experience with a wide range of topics from introductory physics, probability, and statistics all the way to quantum field theory, reinforcement learning, and measure theory. On top of my academic qualifications, I have been teaching for 7+ years and college counseling for 5+ years. I first started as a tutor for calculus when I was in high school, and through the years built my way up to being a full course lecturer at the university level. The courses I've taught include optimization theory, mathematical statistics, and introductory statistics. My favorite of these being introductory statistics! My former students are now at major institutions like USC, Cornell, Columbia, Brown, MIT, and UPenn.

As an academic, I have spent years thinking about how to teach (as I have had my fair share of struggles throughout the years, and ironically my research involves teaching an AI how to do math). I do not believe in simply memorizing formulas, especially when it comes to the physical sciences. I believe that true understanding comes from exploration and being able to logically follow every step forward starting from a very concrete beginning. I think of it as like moving to a new town; at first you will feel lost and maybe overwhelmed. But as you settle in and explore the streets and walk around for yourself, you will start to remember major locations and understand how to navigate from where you are. Nobody (I assume) has a map of their town completely memorized! Thus I view myself as your guide throughout this town so that you are not lost. My approach is to begin with intuition, then doing examples with step-by-step explanations, at the end allowing to have some time to try problems on their own. When students are struggling, I try to identify the conceptual gap and explain the same idea from a different perspective.
