About Olivia
I have performed professionally in a mariachi band for years, and that tradition, rich with emotional, powerful singing, shapes almost everything about how I teach voice today. Nine years into teaching now, I've worked with about one hundred seventy-five students, many of them genuinely drawn to traditional Mexican music and culture specifically. My performance background gives me genuine, lived insight into ranchera's emotional depth and cultural richness, insight that purely classically trained voice teachers simply cannot offer their students. I work particularly well with students genuinely interested in traditional Mexican vocal style, not just generic singing technique disconnected from any cultural tradition. My teaching style is expressive and tradition-focused, reflecting genuine performance experience, though I remain patient with students building foundational technique before tackling advanced repertoire. I have guided numerous students toward real competency in traditional ranchera style, watching many develop genuine passion for the tradition alongside real vocal skill. My years performing in a mariachi band shape a teaching approach built around traditional ranchera vocal style, real repertoire, and the genuine emotional expression this tradition demands. Lessons focus heavily on the powerful, expressive vocal delivery traditional to ranchera and mariachi singing, quite different from classical training many students encounter elsewhere. Breath support and vocal power receive serious attention, since traditional mariachi singing demands genuine projection and emotional intensity throughout an entire performance. I explain the cultural and historical context behind ranchera and mariachi constantly, since understanding this tradition's roots genuinely deepens a student's connection to what they're singing. I encourage genuine emotional expression over polished perfection, since this tradition values raw authenticity and passion as much as technical accuracy throughout.
