About Dr Tong
I am a Computational Social Scientist, experienced Higher Education educator, researcher and author with over 20 years of experience in Higher Education.
My work sits at the intersection of data, technology, research and society. I have extensive experience teaching and supporting students and researchers, and I particularly enjoy helping people develop the confidence to work with data, understand evidence and approach complex analytical problems critically.
I am the author of 10 books and more than 50 academic and professional publications, giving me substantial experience in research, data analysis, critical evaluation and communicating complex ideas clearly to different audiences.
My expertise includes data literacy, data analysis and visualisation, data analytics, data mining, data science, computational research methods and Python for data analysis. I am also an AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner and have expertise in Artificial Intelligence, AI literacy, responsible AI and the wider ethical and social implications of emerging technologies.
One of the strengths I bring to teaching is an interdisciplinary perspective. I believe learning data science is about more than mastering software or producing statistics. It is also about understanding where data comes from, asking good questions, choosing appropriate methods, recognising limitations and bias, interpreting results critically, and communicating findings responsibly.
Throughout my career in Higher Education, I have worked with learners with very different levels of technical experience. I therefore understand that subjects such as data science and programming can initially seem intimidating. My approach is supportive, patient and practical, with an emphasis on making complex concepts understandable while helping learners become increasingly confident and independent.

My teaching approach
I offer personalised Data Science, Data Analysis and Data Literacy lessons for complete beginners, students, researchers and professionals.
As a Computational Social Scientist with over 20 years of experience in Higher Education, I understand that learners come with different backgrounds, goals and levels of confidence when working with data.
My teaching approach is practical, engaging and learner-focused. I combine clear explanations with hands-on exercises, real-world datasets, practical demonstrations and guided projects.
My aim is not simply to teach you how to use analytical tools. I want you to understand what the data represents, which methods are appropriate, why you are using them, how to interpret the results, and how to communicate your findings clearly and responsibly.
I aim to make data and analytical concepts accessible without oversimplifying them. You will be encouraged to ask questions, explore data, solve problems and develop the confidence to work independently.

I believe people learn data skills most effectively by working with data themselves. Rather than spending an entire lesson listening to explanations, you will normally have opportunities to explore, analyse, interpret and discuss data during the session.
I also place particular emphasis on critical thinking. Being able to produce a graph, statistic or analytical result is only part of working with data. You also need to understand whether the analysis is appropriate, what its limitations are and what conclusions the evidence actually supports.
Typical lesson length
Most lessons are 1–2 hours, depending on your experience, goals and the topic.
You can book an individual session to focus on a particular skill, dataset or analytical challenge, or we can develop a structured programme of lessons that progressively builds your knowledge and confidence.
Where appropriate, we can work on a practical dataset or project over several sessions. This allows you to experience the full process of working with data—from asking questions and preparing the data through to analysis, visualisation, interpretation and communication.
Qualifications & experience
I am a Computational Social Scientist with over 20 years of experience in Higher Education and an AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner.
I am also an experienced researcher and author, having published 10 books and more than 50 academic and professional articles.
My Higher Education background has given me extensive experience in teaching, research, mentoring and supporting learners at different levels.
My interdisciplinary background enables me to combine technical and analytical skills with a broader understanding of research, evidence, society, organisations and the ethical contexts in which data is collected and used.
My areas of expertise relevant to these lessons include Data Literacy, Data Analysis, Data Analytics, Data Visualisation, Data Mining, Data Science, Python for Data Analysis, Computational Research Methods, Research Skills and the Responsible Use of Data.
