About Paul
I’m Paul Hartness, a Senior C++ Developer with over 25 years’ professional experience in the City and international financial markets.
I’ve worked as a technical lead and senior developer for major investment banks and fintech companies including FIS Global, Finastra, Standard Chartered, Barclays, London Metal Exchange, Natixis, Legal & General and Reuters. My day job involves building and maintaining high-performance, business-critical systems — trading platforms, risk management engines, pricing libraries, post-trade settlement systems and quant libraries.
I work daily with modern C++ (C++11 through C++20), STL, Boost, protobuf, Docker, Linux, Git, and have extensive experience in performance optimisation, large-scale refactoring, automated testing (Google Test/Mock, TDD) and clean, maintainable code. I also have strong General SQL experience from real-world database migrations and data-handling projects.
I’ve spent much of my career mentoring and leading development teams, and I genuinely enjoy helping others understand complex concepts and turn them into practical, working solutions. That’s why I decided to offer one-to-one tuition — so I can pass on the exact same real-world skills and professional practices I use every day on live commercial projects.

As an experienced C++ contractor currently working on live commercial projects, I offer practical, one-to-one online tuition in C++ programming and General SQL.
My approach is very hands-on and mirrors real-world development. Every student gets their own private GitHub repository where we work together. I present small, focused problems each lesson that you solve and commit — exactly like a professional developer would.
We build everything progressively towards a complete final project. For example:
• Lesson 1: Understanding classes → we create a Student class with getters, setters and proper encapsulation.
• Lesson 2: Collection classes and interfaces → we build a container that can work with any object implementing a defined interface (including the Student we created earlier).
• Later lessons add more features (inheritance, templates, smart pointers, SQL integration, etc.) until the final project brings everything together into a working application.
This way you not only learn the theory but immediately apply it, see how the pieces fit, and end up with a portfolio piece you can actually show employers.
Lessons are normally 60 minutes long and fully tailored to your level and goals — complete beginners, students needing coursework help, self-learners, or professionals preparing for technical interviews.
