About William
I’m William, a recent Accounting and Finance graduate from Newcastle University, and I’ve been tutoring on and off since I was eighteen.
I started at Explore Learning while I was still in sixth form, working with children from age 4 up to GCSE. What kept me there for two years was seeing the moment something clicks — a student who’d written themselves off as “bad at maths” suddenly working through a problem without needing me. Three of my Year 10s went on to get Grade 9s, and I still think that’s the most satisfying thing I’ve done.
Alongside tutoring I’ve worked in sales and now in a fast-paced customer service role, so I’m comfortable explaining things clearly to people who don’t share my background in the subject. That turns out to be most of what good tutoring is.
My own GCSEs were with AQA, including an 8 in Maths, and I went on to study Maths, Biology and Chemistry at A-Level before my finance degree. I’m patient, I don’t rush, and I’d rather spend ten minutes on why something works than have you memorise a method you’ll forget by May.

I spent two years tutoring with Explore Learning, working with students aged 4 to 16 and often managing six at once. Three of my Year 10 students achieved Grade 9s, and several younger students exceeded their SATs targets.
My lessons are built around past papers rather than lecturing. We start with whatever you’re stuck on, work through problems together so I can see where your thinking goes wrong, and finish with two or three questions to attempt alone before we next meet.
I sat all my GCSEs with AQA, so I know the mark schemes and command words — particularly how marks get lost on longer written questions. I’ll always tell you honestly where you’re dropping marks and what to fix first.
I teach GCSE Maths (Foundation and Higher), Combined Science, Business Studies, A-Level Maths, and first-year university accounting and finance. I hold a BSc in Accounting and Finance from Newcastle University.
