For students with past experience, my main job in a first lesson is to find out how you play. What method books you have worked out of? What pieces have you studied? I will ask the student to play for me their most recently worked-on piece and a scale of their choosing. I also spend some time discussing your goals with studying the violin or viola. For complete beginners I begin by teaching the bow hold. Then I move on to holding the violin and dropping the fingers down in tune. Finally, we put them together and work on Twinkle Twinkle Little Star in Suzuki Book 1. All this happens over the course of about six lessons. I teach using the Suzuki method books, but I do not call myself a Suzuki teacher. I supplement the Suzuki books with other etudes and exercises. I really like Fiddle Magic by Sally O'Reilly and the Sevcik exercises.

Eric was a very caring, patient violin teacher to my beginner 8-year-old daughter. He explained concepts well to her, including mini lessons on music history and theory in the lessons too. I highly recommend him for beginning students.
Eric has been a great instructor for my son, who is not always easily engaged. He patiently worked with him, thoroughly explaining things in a way that was easy for a beginner to understand and follow, and he helped set my son up for a successful future with the violin. I highly recommend him!
Eric customized each lesson to my daughter's needs. He added insightful comments and was overall congenial! She especially enjoyed playing a duet with him for the recital. I highly recommend him as a violin teacher.
Both of my boys studied with Eric starting in 5th grade. Eric pays close attention to detail when teaching violin and viola technique. He doesn't rush through things just to create the illusion of progress. He comes up with different ways to help each student succeed. Eric is a very devoted teacher, and I really appreciated that.
I liked that Eric’s approach to teaching music was very structured, and he taught me the fundamentals that I needed. He also taught concepts like phrasing early on, and this helped me focus on areas outside of just intonation and rhythm. Eric strives to help you improve, and his explanations/exercises are easy to grasp. He emphasizes making music rather than just reading notes off a page. The storytelling aspect is also very interesting! Overall, the studio was very well organized, personalized, and helpful.
Eric was an amazing teacher he was extremely thorough and tried very hard to make it fun and interesting and above all meaningful. Christian a had a wonderful expetience learning from Bate Violin Studio.
Eric gave an interesting perspective on playing that will surely improve my playing for year to come. Thank you!
