About Pearl

As a young musician, I have had extensive experience working amongst students who have a shared passion for the performing arts. I have been a part of multiple choir programs within SMMUSD and as of last year, I toured around France as a member of the advanced all girls Chamber ensemble of the Santa Monica High School Chorale Program. Apart from my lengthy journey as a choir student, I have found great success in perfecting my skills with classical repertoire. Through the support and teachings of my private vocal coach and my high school chorale director, I was able to access opportunities to showcase my voice after being recognized by Los Angeles based Classical Voice competitions, including the Southern California Vocal Association's Vocal Solo Competition, the Southern California Vocal Association's Honor choir program, and the Santa Monica Kiwanis Club's annual Solo Competition in which I have been awarded 1st and 2nd place music scholarships for my performances in classical Italian and Russian repertoire. Most recently, I had been selected as one of the 15 semifinalist for the Classical Voice division of the Los Angeles Music Center's Spotlight Competition, a highly recognized scholarship and arts training program for young artists across LA county. I am looking forward to starting my bachelors degree in Vocal Performance at UCLA in the upcoming fall. As important as these accolades may be, I have always had a deep rooted love for other genres of music such as Musical Theatre and Pop. I have had experience in teaching my 10 year old brother, the basics of music theory, breathe support, and stylistic presentation when preparing him for music recitals, showcases, and choir functions at his elementary school. With the amount of classical training that I have acquired throughout my high school career, I am very flexible with any repertoire that my student would wish to learn. I am eager to pass down my musical knowledge and experience to those who wish to start singing!

For those who are interested in the extent of my vocal development in classical voice, I have included a YouTube link to a few of my audition videos throughout my high school career

(concealed information)

I enjoy inspiring young singers to pursue music as a therapeutic way to express their emotions and artistic aspirations. I can resonate with young singers who have dreamed of singing for the feeling of joy that it brings to their hearts as I was once wanting guidance from a more experienced musician.

Since the start of the pandemic, I have been interested in created a small business in teaching voice to young children. My vocal coach has strongly recommended that I start to gain work experience within the field of music and I feel confident that I can gage the interests of beginner singers.

I have had extensive experience in chorale studies since elementary school. I have been a member of the advanced Chamber ensemble at Santa Monica Highschool Chorale program for four years. I have also been a section leader in my choir ensemble which granted me the responsibility to assist in helping fellow students learn new repertoire. I have also been privately trained for four years in classical repertoire under my vocal choach, Mrs. Carol Tingle, at the Mrs. Carol Tingle Voice Studio located in Santa Monica, California. I have experience in competing and winning Los Angeles based vocal competitions associated with the Music Center's Spotlight program.

I must preface that due to the current conditions of the Covid-19 pandemic, I will only conduct virtual voice lessons via Skype. I start by asking a new student what goals they would like to reach in learning how to sing. The student will be asked what musical genre they are interested in or would be most comfortable singing. After I get an idea on the appropriate repertoire to introduce to a student based on their interests, I test their vocal range. This can be done by singing the major scale, starting on a middle C, and asking the student to sing the lowest and highest note in an "Ah" vowel. After the vocal range test, I will proceed to guide a new student through some basic vocal exercises including bubbling, a common vocal technique which warms up the vocal cords and develops the vocal range. I will then instruct the student to sing several Major arpeggios with guidance on the piano. After properly warming up the voice, the student may present a copy of sheet music in which they are interested in learning. Any specified song requests can be sent to me 1-2 days prior before a lesson via my work email, (concealed information)

A typical 30 minute lesson will engage in teaching a student on how to properly warm up their voice, which will take around 10 minutes. The rest of the lesson will focus on the students interest in learning  preferred repertoire, in which the student will present a song or will be recommended a song by me, based on their musical interests, and will be guided on how to approach certain notes, rhythms, and stylistic features in the given piece.

I have given my 10 years old brother mini voice lessons after he showed a strong interest in joining his elementary school's choir program. As his sole role model in navigating the choir experience and learning to become a soloist, I have guided him in learning both classical and pop based repertoire for a various number of school based talent shows and choir functions.

A student must look for a teacher who is passionate about giving their student a hands on learning experience in which the teacher learns to work towards a student's confidence in their vocal abilities, and educates their student on healthy ways to train the vocal cords and expand the vocal range. A teacher should be more than willing to work with the student's learning needs, and should be clear and concise in their critique of the students voice so that the learning experience is understandable and malleable.

I have had the goal of becoming one of the top 15 classical voice finalists for the Music Center's Spotlight program. I was encouraged to audition since my sophomore year of highschool. As of my senior year, I have finally been able to achieve a semifinalist ranking, which has given me great coverage as a young singer. More importantly, I have been accepted into my dream university, here in Los Angeles at UCLA. I will be under the tutelage of the highly respected, Professor Vladimir Chernov, a former Russian baritone who sang in La Scala and the Metropolitan for a number of years. I am confident that with his guidance, I will expand my artistry to higher levels of professionalism.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What abilities do I have (if any) in understand basic music theory? (reading solfedge, counting rhythm)

Am I interested in pursuing a future career as a musician or do I view singing as a hobby?

Would taking private lessons improve my confidence as a singer and lessen my stage fright?

What musical skills would I like to be emphasized or explained to in greater details when asking my teacher to assist me in learning a certain genre of music or a new piece?
