I enjoy teaching people of all ages and ability levels how to play piano and understand music. Every one of my students gets a student-centered curriculum that I assign to them based on their age, ability and interests. I enjoy helping students find their musical voice and working on projects that are meaningful to them.
I started as a student teacher for my instructor's studio when I was 16 years old. Beginning to teach under the mentorship of my own teacher was extremely inspiring and helpful for my understanding of the field. One day I hope to establish a similar mentorship program in my own private studio.
I earned my Bachelors of Music degree in Piano Pedagogy from the University of Oklahom and my Masters of Music in Piano Pedagogy from Texas Christian University. I also have over 10 years of piano teaching experience- both in private and group settings, as well as experience teaching students of all ages and ability levels. Before establishing my own private studio, I taught for the Texas Christian Univeristy Music Preparatory Division for 5 years as well as a handful other independent music and arts studios in Texas and Oklahoma.

For students who are both new to my studio and piano study, we typically spend the first lesson discussing musical goals and assessing what they already know about music. This gives me a chance to get to know their personality and a little bit of their learning styles, so I can choose repertoire to help them accomplish their musical goals.
For transfer students who have already had piano lessons experience, we will typically start with whatever the student rememebers from their previous lessons. It is especially helpful if they have pieces they can still play for me that they learned either on their own or with a former teacher. I will also typcially have the sstudent sight read some easier pieces to get an even better undesrtanding of their abilities. We will also discuss musical goals and reperotire so I can choose an appropriate curriculum.
I love working with students of all ages and ability levels!
The youngest students I have taught were 4 years old, but I believe most children are ready to start around age 6 or 7. I have taught students up through high school with goals ranging from just taking lessons for fun to preparing college auditions.
I also enjoy teaching adults of all ages and have experience teaching adult beginners through early advanced pianists.
Try to find a teacher who plays piano as a primary instrument or is at least a proficient pianist. I've seen many studios with teachers who played another instrument primarily and then taught themselves to play piano, rather than going through formal instruction. While these teachers may work well for certain types of students, they may not be able to provide a well-rounded musisc education that is specific to piano.
If you're not sure about something, ask questions! We understand and expect that our potential students won't know as much as we do about studying piano in a private music studio, so please never hesistate to ask for more information.
I am most inspired by the process of learning, so my most fond teaching events come from small moments during lessons when my students are able to achieve a skill or play a passage that seemed unattainable the week before. While performances are an obvious goal that students are always working towards, I am most delighted when they are able to use critical listening and problem solving to overcome challenges in their music study.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
First, decide what your primary goals are for taking piano lessons. Do you want to learn to play for fun or to be compete in festivals or contests? Do you want to learn to read sheet music or improvise your own music? Make sure a prospective teacher understands these goals and is willing to be accomodating towards them, before comitting to lessons with them.

Perfect! Elyse is great. She comes to our home and teaches my 6 year old son and 5 year old daughter. Elyse is very patient and the weekly progress is noticeable. We practice with the kids about 5-10 minutes at least 4 days a week, and Elyse walks us through what she wants us to practice. Our kids love it, and we highly recommend Elyse.

Elyse taught piano to my son for many years, and did a wonderful job with him. He always loved working with her, and truly respected her knowledge and expertise even during his difficult teenage years when he was unwilling to respect his middle school teachers... Elyse gave him the flexibility he needed to feel that he was expressing his own creativity rather than just following a set piano curriculum. Overall he learned a great deal from her, and we're very grateful for her patience with him!
Elyse was my instructor in an adult group piano class for four years. She's an excellent teacher, very intuitive about what her students need. She knows how to mix instruction with levity. I will miss her.
Elyse taught our group adult piano class as part of the Extended Education program at Texas Christian University. I thought she was a great teacher. Initially, I knew next to nothing about music; I have now progressed to being able to read music and can play intermediate level piano pieces. I would thoroughly recommend Elyse to anyone who wishes to study piano.
My Son studied piano with Elyse for 4 years. She did an amazing job of keeping his piano lessons fun and interesting for him. She provided new challenges for him, encouraged him along the way and helped him grow into a fine young musician. We greatly appreciate her talents andstrengths which makes her an outstanding piano teacher.
At first, I was a little apprehensive about starting piano but taking classes with Elyse changed that completely. When I began I didn't even know C from D, but over the course of two years I learned so much, and I am now playing in festivals and competitions. I was always excited for each week's lesson because Elyse let me challenge myself with pieces above my level but made sure that I never missed out on any techniques or theory while I was playing them (or at least attempting to). Most importantly, Elyse helped my liking of music and piano grow into such a great love for the instrument that I don't know what I would do without it. I am so grateful for everything she has taught me; she is an amazing teacher.
When my teenage daughter started taking lessons from Elyse, she barely knew her notes. After only two years with Elyse, she is playing high-level songs such as Prelude in E minor k. 938 by J.S. Bach; playing not only beautifully but technically correct. Elyse allowed my daughter to learn at her own pace while ensuring she did not miss out on any theory. Piano lessons were the highlight of my daughter's week. Elyse is a wonderful teacher, and we were lucky to have her.
Ms. Elyse is an excellent piano teacher. My daughters took lessons from her for 3 years and they enjoyed learning from her.
I took piano lessons with Elyse for multiple years, and she was the fourth piano instructor that I have had. That being said, she was easily the best teacher, and my favorite. One of my greatest compliments I can give to her is that she is very flexible, yet firm when it counts.
Elyse allowed me to, for the most part, play the songs that I wanted to play. Since you progress the fastest through something if you enjoy it, it allowed me to accelerate through my learning process much faster than otherwise. The other reason that I accelerated like I did is due to the simple fact that Elyse is a good teacher, in every way I can think of.
Overall, I have to recommend Elyse to anyone who is looking to play piano. You will be happy with your choice.View more recommendations
