About Will
Hi! I’m Will Crockett, a semi-retired location/studio portrait photographer living up in San Luis Obispo, CA. I have enjoyed shooting images of business execs, models, regular folks and even a few celebs and US Presidents for TIME, Newsweek and PEOPLE magazines and a large collection of advertising agencies. I've been a photo educator at the highest levels, speaking at regional events and at the national photo conventions numerous times sharing my ability to shape and control light for the type of portraits you see in magazines, billboard ads, and placed into a handsome frame above the family room fireplace. I have recently recieved my State of California Teaching Credential and love to teach photographers of all ages how to really use a camera, lens and lighting to make teriffic portraits.
My portrait photography style is built on soft, smooth, client pleasing lighting that reveals my subjects personality. My photo marketing business, uses on-camera flash both outdoors and indoors to create professional event images for clients. Lighting comes as naturally to me as breathing and I'll be glad to share what I know with you. It's much easier than you think!
I love when a client calls and wants me to create a portrait of their boss at their business, or of their family at thier beach home, then gives me the freedom to shoot it the way I like because they have used me before or have enjoyed my website images. I get to know the subjects during the sessions and nothing is better than hearing the kind words of satisfaction when they see the images and are happy they hired me.
Fujifilm contacted me after seeing a few of my images in TIME magazine. I was using one of their brand new films in an unusual way and it caught their eye. They asked if I would share my lighting and shooting techniques in a live seminar format and I liked it. They were happy to sponsor a speaking tour of 36 cities across the USA for years. We are still friends and I love their cameras.
I created a 5000 sq ft photo training facility outside Chicago called ShootSmarter University. It allowed me to train photographers in groups of 40 or less using a 4 day hands on workshop format. We would also bring in 20 other photograhers from around the globe to come and teach when we were not using the facility for photo industry training with clients like Fujifilm, Manfrotto, MAC Group, Photogenic, Calumet Photographic and others. We also created the popular ShootSmarter brand of photo educational DVDs and downloadable videos that were widely available in just about all camera stores. I have very deep experience in training photographers and speaking at the national levels of PPA, SPAC and WPPI conventions.

Email or live phone call seems to work well so I can fully understand the type of information I can provide. Then I like some time to prepare and pull up some samples to illustrate the lesson visually. Then use Skype or face to face to discuss the content, solution and information needed.
Profesional photographers in need of improvement, emerging pros moving into more profitable workflows and practices, college students ( I've lectured in many of the country's top photo schools), serious non-pros looking for lighting and posing improvements, pros and non pros looking for better on-camer and off camera speedlite lighting solutions. I have become one of the DoD / Pentagons photo trainers on the topic of speedlite flash control.
Learning how to create clean, crisp, technically correct files from a portrait session is a process that moves in a straight line. All your lighting and shooting tools need to be setup and ready to capture the look you want before the subject arrives. That way you can focus on connecting with the subject and guiding them toward a great image. Photographers that are uncomfortable or not confident in their camera and lighting skills can make a subject nervous and that never turns out well. I suggest emerging photographers need to settle in on one camera body, just a few lenses, one camera setup and really learn that they can do. Then add a few lighting setups and practice, practice, practice.
I was asked to be filmed for the upcoming documentary on photographer Marc Hauser to share the times Marc and I worked together. It was filmed by the great photographer Sandro Miller in a Hollywood studio.
