After studying in New York and Paris, he received a major award in 2011 for his sketch “Women at Rest” from the highly regarded Salmagundi Club in NYC. His work is diverse, including landscapes, cityscapes, portraits, sketches, and still lifes. He was born in Ohio and grew up in River Forest, Illinois. After graduating Providence College in Rhode Island, he studied theology and philosophy in Washington, D.C. He was subsequently ordained a priest and then pursued postgraduate studies at Yale, writing his thesis on Peter Maurin, the mentor of Dorothy Day. His studio is in the north tower of Saint Jean Baptiste Church. In the heart of NYC, it is an inspiring space and ideal for viewing his work. This handout includes a small selection of his current works for sale but a more comprehensive brochure is available upon request. You can also see his work on his twitter and website alongside news updates.. His commission work is his main focus. An individual or collective family portrait, a landscape of a favorite home or place, or a still life in an area of interest are all available. He hosts showings from time to time in his studio. These typically run from 2;30 pm to 4:30 pm and offer an opportunity to view a larger body of his work and to meet the artist himself. It was previously owned by Louisa May Alcott’s uncle. She lived here from 1867 to 1870. According to local tradition, it is here that she finished her famous novel “Little Women.” For me, besides the charm of the structure, I was struck by the colors of the afternoon sun and wisteria creeping across the entrance way. The great shadow invites but haunts, while the sitter rests and ponders. This could be titled “Before Gentrification.” Located in the East Village just next to Thompkins Square, it symbolized for me the lost and forgotten. The graffiti on the walls of this drug-infested, burned-out apartment house spoke powerfully and ironically. In death there is life. The sad clown looks on, while a man alone meanders past cars. Alcott House, NYC; $2,500; 16 x 20in; Oil on linen Viva, NYC; $2,500; 24 x 20in; Oil on linen I painted this view over several early mornings from my room in a former 13th-century monastery which is now a private home. The mist covering the mountains looked like snow, dissipating gradually as the sun burned it off. Located in the Tarn department about an hour from Albi, the birthplace of Toulouse-Lautrec, it was the favorite village of Albert Camus. St. Trophime is a Romanesque treasure in the south of France not far from the Camargue. It is a UNESCO world heritage site and was the favorite town of Emperor Augustus Caesar. The light in Arles is piercing and intense. I have done many paintings here and have wondered why Van Gogh never painted this subject. From university days I had this panama hat. Coming back from a visit to Amsterdam where friends brought me to the Heineken Brewery Pub, I decided to put together these mementos of special times in Europe over the years. I received the Certificate of Merit for Outstanding Work from the Salmagundi Club, NYC, in 2011 for this sketch. The great medieval philosopher and theologian Thomas Aquinas taught that the human person is the most perfect creature in nature. The nude has been the inspiration of all great art in Western civilization. In painting the portrait or figure, I am seeking to acknowledge the spirit of the subject, the mystery and the soul. Dorothy Day with her mentor Peter Maurin founded the Catholic Worker newspaper in 1933. In the following years "houses of hospitality" for the poor and homeless were founded in NYC and throughout the USA. Until her death she remained a staunch pacifist and advocate of the poor and the common laborer. In 1973 she was arrested for civil disobedience with Caesar Chavez. In her early years she was involved with various radical causes and newspapers. She was a close friend of Eugene O'Neill. In 1927 she converted to Roman Catholicism and is now a candidate for sainthood by the Catholic Church. This painting is now in the private collection of the Archdiocese of New York City. Ben was a poor deaf mute with some mental issues who wandered the East Village of New York. He often came for refreshment and solace at Mary House, one of the homes founded by Dorothy Day. I befriended him and asked if I could paint his portrait. His response was but a grunt. Because of his personal circumstances, I had to work from photographs, although I prefer painting from life. When I finished it, I made an appointment to show him the painting. I was a bit apprehensive about what his reaction would be. When I unveiled it, his large smile and the gleam in his eyes spoke volumes that words could never have expressed. Pure joy! Dorothy Day, NYC.
