First, I like to get a sense of the student's musical experience - whether they've played in an ensemble, taken lessons before, played any other instruments, if they read music, etc. If they have more musical experience, I may ask them to sing or play some scales and perform a piece so I can get a sense of their musical level.
I also ask each student what they want to achieve with their lessons - whether it be to learn some new songs or to work on their technique, etc. I want to tailor each student's lessons to fit their goals in addition to providing instruction in musicianship, expression, theory, and technique.
