About Jonas
I'm a professional Jazz drummer and instructor. I'm working as a musician playing gigs in NYC and I have a lot of experience in teaching.

Hi everyone! My name is Jonas Esser and I'm originally from Germany. I have a graduate degree from the City College of New York in Jazz Drums as well as a bachelor degree in jazz performance, specializing in drums from the University of Music and Performing Arts in Mannheim (Germany).
It is important to me to help my students with their goals and I'm happy to see when someone is improving. I have about 7 years of experience teaching professionally at universities and music studios.
I'm mostly a working musician, playing all over NYC, but I have some private students as well. I have performed with Jazz artists like Neta Raanan, Steve Wilson, Melissa Aldana and Matt Brewer and I've studied with Nasheet Waits, Carl Allen, Jochen Rueckert and many more.

I am going to design a plan based on your interests and goals. We can work on technique, different concepts in coordiantion, music theory, composition and learning different styles such as classical, jazz, pop, funk, Latin, Brazil among others, to improve your rhythmic skills and ear training.

I’m very passionate about music and teaching, because I feel like I'm always learning when I come up with new ways of explaining how to approach a certain skill.
While studying in my undergrad I started teaching private lessons and goups in a music studio in Germany
I have a masters in Jazz Drums from City college and a bachelors degree from the University of the Arts Mannheim, Germany, but more importantly I am an internationally touring jazz musician.

About the lesson

I will ask them what they want to learn, what music they are into and in case they already have some experience, what they have worked on in the past. We will typically just get to know each other and immediately start playing and practicing something.
I've worked with students of different ages (From 4-60 years old). I also worked with people with special needs.
Make sure your teacher is good on their instrument and is a professional musician. Also make sure the teacher has concepts on how to work on skills such as coordination, technique, time feel etc.
The teacher should also be organized and knows how to deliver an idea.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
You dont have to prepare anything if you dont want to.
If you have an idea about what you want to do, thats great and I will try to consider that and helop you reach your goals, giving you some hints in different directons as well. But its also ok to let me lead through the lesson.
