About Hussam
My service stands out because I am passionate for ensuring that my students achieve their goals, whether that be as small as mastering a concept or as large as acing an entire course, and that I satisfy both their needs and expectations from my tutoring services. I like to structure my services around the individual needs of each of my students, from the scheduled sessions all the way to my tutoring methods. Additionally, I am always excited to walk a student through learning a new concept and tackling a problem they are unsure how to solve. Just seeing my students understand something new to them and becoming better at learning and working through their coursework brings me satisfaction. I also like to keep in contact with my students outside of the scheduled times, and see how they are doing in their courses even when I am not around. If needed, I can also help with problems my students are stuck on during their individual study sessions. My extensive experience in tutoring students from elementary school all the way up to college since 2013 in the LA Metro area will surely help me meets the needs and expectations of you and your student.
I enjoy being able to pass on all that I have learned during my academic career to my students so that they can succeed during their coursework more than I did during mine. I also enjoy seeing my students become better at learning their coursework and solving problems, and seeing my students satisfied with their performance and succeeding in their courses brings me joy and helps me feel good about the work I do. In turn, this makes me do my job better by becoming more self-motivated and hard-working. I enjoy being flexible and tailoring sessions based on students’ needs and schedules, simplifying the answer to a complex problem or the explanation of a concept to enhance students’ understanding, building and maintaining rapport with students, and organizing tasks to meet students’ goals for academic success. My qualifications for tutoring STEM courses include 5+ years of experience in private tutoring and even more in volunteer tutoring and tutoring with a program center. My certifications are an M.S. and B.S. in Engineering from Duke and UCLA, respectively, and an A.S. in Math. My accomplishments include helping dozens of students achieve their needs with my tutoring services, whether that be passing a standardized/course exam or quiz, mastering a concept or problem for a project, or passing an entire course. I got started teaching in 2013, when I was a senior in high school. I was a part of Key Club (Kiwanis) and I decided to fulfill my volunteer hours as a tutor at an elementary afterschool daycare. I really enjoyed tutoring elementary students with their English, math and science homework until their parents came to pick them up. I continued volunteering there for about a year, until I started college in Fall of 2014. In college, I then began volunteer tutoring at multiple centers within my community college before making a career out of tutoring in the Spring of 2015. I volunteer tutored veteran students, STEM undergraduate students, student-athletes and low income / underrepresented students in math, biology, chemistry, physics, and writing.
I have a Master's of Science (M.S.) in Biomedical Engineering from Duke University and a Bachelor's of Science (B.S.) in Chemical Engineering from the University of California - Los Angeles (UCLA). I also have an Associate's in Science to Transfer (A.S.-T.) in Mathematics from Mt. San Antonio College (Mt. SAC). My previous education relates to my ability to tutor students of all grade levels in math, physics and chemistry. Additionally, I have been tutoring students in these subjects since 2013, when I started out as a volunteer tutoring elementary kids at an after-school daycare. Since then, I've done both private tutoring and tutoring at multiple centers in these subjects for students in both high school and college. I've been trained to tutor students both short-term (as needed for an exam / quiz) and long-term (for an entire course).

First, I like to ask the student general questions about their tutoring lessons, such as the preferred times and durations for their lessons and how many times per week they need tutoring, what class(es) they need tutoring in, when they have those classes during the week and how long the classes will last (an entire quarter, semester, half a semester, etc.). Next, because of the ongoing COVID pandemic, I ask the student whether they would like to be tutored in-person or online. Then, I like to ask the student general questions about the course(s) they need tutoring in, such as how often there will be quizzes or exams in the course, how often homework and/or projects are given, and how they are doing so far in the course in terms of understanding the material already gone over and grade-wise. After, I like to ask the student what they expect from the tutoring sessions, such as if they need homework help, exam prep help, going over concepts or a combination of those, how they prefer to be taught material (learning concepts, going over practice problems, etc.), what grade they would like or need for the course, etc. Finally, I like to negotiate the tutoring rate with the student, where I base my price off of the answers for the previous questions. Once I begin working with the student, then I first let the student know to provide any feedback/criticism about my tutoring style and let me know if they are facing any difficulties so I could change it to better work for them. Then, I start my tutoring sessions based off of their preferences, modifying it with any feedback and difficulties the student faces along the way during our first few sessions.
I have worked with students of all ages who needed tutoring in math, physics, chemistry, basic biology and English/writing. I have tutored students in elementary school (K-6), high school (9-12) and college (years 1 - 3), both as a private tutor and as a tutor at a center. I have the most experience, however, in tutoring college students, followed by high school students.
Other than the basic advice of making sure that the teacher knows the material that you need tutoring in well and is able to teach it, other advice I would give to a student looking to hire a teacher in my area of expertise is to make sure that they are enthusiastic in tutoring you. If the tutor has a genuine love for their job, they will always have a positive attitude, do their best to be available, helpful and motivating for their student and make sure that the student is getting the most out of their tutoring. Additionally, look for a teacher that is flexible and able to take feedback, since these teachers tend to be the best in dynamically changing their tutoring style to best fit the student's everchanging needs, and these teachers tend to listen the best to their students and see how they can change their teaching methods to help the student overcome the challenges they face during the course. Lastly, look for a tutor that is patient with their students and can organize themselves and their schedule to be as resourceful as possible to you, the student.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Before talking to teachers about their needs, questions that students should think through include how many hours per week they need tutoring, how often they need tutoring throughout the week including the days and times, and whether they would prefer to be taught in person or online. Additionally, they should also think about how they are doing so far in the course in terms of both the grades they are getting on assignments and exams and how well they are learning the material already gone over. Additionally, the student should think through why they need a tutor and what they need or expect to get out of the tutoring, such as homework help, exam prep help, reinforcing concepts taught in class that day, preventing failure in the course and/or strongly improving grades, etc. By knowing how to answer these questions, it will not only be easier for the tutor to help meet the needs of the student but also for the student to get the most out of their tutoring and to hire a teacher who is a perfect fit for their needs.

My pricing system for my lessons depends on multiple factors, such as the grade level of the student, how advanced the course the student needs tutoring in is, the distance I have to travel for the lessons, and whether the tutoring is for exam prep, homework help or just mastering the concepts taught in class that day, among others. The base price I always follow is $20 per hour of lesson, then add on depending on the factors stated earlier. To me, $20 per hour sounds fair for a K-6 student who needs tutoring in math or science near my area.
