About Katelyn
I prefer the individualized attention that tutoring offers to students, particularly as a tutor who has the ability to get to know each student's personality quirks, learning styles, strengths, and weaknesses and be able to teach to those avenues. I try to pull upon real life, relevant examples in order to make the information "stick" for each student. I have a high success rate in both private and corporate tutoring and am consistently recommended and requested in both environments.
With that being said, I understand the financial burden supplemental education costs can bring upon a family. I try to keep my rates reasonable to include any materials and/or travel that may need to occur in order to assist you/your student. I am also somewhat flexible on my rates to assist students and families in need, with the exception of standardized test prep (SAT, ACT, GRE, TOEFL, Praxis, etc.). I try to run my tutoring to be as much of an "open book" as possible - the same way I run my community center. I keep very open communication with students and parents regarding progress, missed assignments, red flags, and green lights as well. For study skills/organization and test prep students, I do assign homework, as it is one thing for the student to understand the information while I am sitting in from of him/her but another for him/her to be able to do it independently.

A little bit about my background: I went into teaching 14 years ago to be able to make a difference in the lives of children. Soon after I started my education degree, the realm of high stakes testing began. I spent a number of years inside the classroom and decided it wasn't the place for me - teaching to the test is not what helps students actually learn, in my opinion. It was from there I earned an M.S.Ed. in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). While I was working through that program, I began to manage a community center, where I have been making a difference in the lives of children every day for 9 years. Approximately 7 years ago, I began doing some tutoring at a nationally known tutoring center which rekindled my yearning to teach.

Each student is different so to say there is a "one size fits all" for how I work with new students is incorrect. For SAT/ACT students, we will generally start with a diagnostic test to decide what to focus on, but depending on the student and whether or not he/she has just taken a test, that may be redundant so we'll jump right into instruction. For other subjects, it really quite depends what the student (and/or the parent) is looking for - some students need assignments and others bring assignments. Tutoring really should be individualized and that is how I choose to work with my students.
