About Evan
Teaching experience:
I've been tutoring college and high school students for about 3 years. Additionally, as a student of the UCSD-SDSU joint doctoral program I've been teaching chemistry lab to around 40 students a semester for a about half a year.
Teaching strategy:
When I tutor my students I try to breakdown subjects into their most basic ideas and build up from there. I love to employ diagrams and analgoies whenever I can as these tools have proved extremely effective in the past. My overarching goal when teaching students is to leave them with strong rational reasoning skills so that they can answer or know how to find the answer to any problems they come across in the future.
Experience in math & science:
In 2015 I enrolled at the University of Oregon where I pursued a degree in biology. I was on the dean's list a total of 4 times and aced my organic chemistry, calculus, physics, and biology courses.
From 2018-2019 I worked at my first research job in the Hansen lab at the University of Oregon. While in the Hansen lab I wrote my undergraduate thesis on utilizing TIRF microscopy to investigate the mechanisms controlling phosphatidylinositol phosphate (PIP) lipid synthesis. A pathway, that when broken, has been correlated with various cancers.
In the summer of 2018 I performed research under Tracy Robson at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. During my time there I tried to determine if a drug, that had been originally developed for breast cancer, could be utilized for ovarian cancer as well.
I graduated with honors from the University of Oregon in 2019. Reciving a bachelor of science in biology, with a minor in chemistry.
From 2019-2020 I worked in the formulation department of young a pharmaceutical company called Coherus Biosciences. The main goal of my work here was to determine what excipients could be used to stabilize the various biologics in the pipeline so that they could be safely stored long term.
From Fall 2020-Present I enrolled in the Joint Doctoral program offered by the chemistry and biochemistry departments at UCSD and SDSU. I currently am utilizing x-ray crystallography to study a protein which performs a rare DNA modification reaction.

A good tutor is adaptable and while personalize their teaching on an individual basis. That being said I do have a general strategy that I open up with for new students.
Typically I start out by getting to know why the student needs a tutor in the first place. Are they on the verge of failing a class? Are they preemptively hiring because they know they've struggle in a subject in the past? etc...
Then I create a plan of attack with the student which meets their needs.
For example, if they're failing a class I will first go through the syllabus and determine a list of goals that when met will allow the student to pass/succeed in the class. After that I'd create a semi long term schedule with the student to ensure they spend the necessary amount of time to meet the previously determined goals.
I've tutored high school students in every single subject and I've tutored college students in math and science. I've had students who needed very little help and students who struggled immensely. The students who were struggling when they hired me can be divided up into two categories, those who genuinely struggle to grasp concepts and those who didn't know how to learn or study.
I'd look for a teacher whos methods of teaching work well for you. What works for some students doesn't necessarily work for others.
While I was in highschool and in my early years of college I was tutored in math and science. I can tell you from experience that there are many different types of tutors to choose from. Stay away from tutors who make you feel bad about yourself and tutors who are too ridgid in their teaching style.
I've recently taken up mountain biking which has been one of the most thrilling hobbies imaginable. However, my favorite hobby remains surfing which I have been doing since I was 12 years old.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Student's should try to identify if they're struggling because of a lack of planning, a of lack of understanding, or a lack of time.
