About Bethany
I have professionally taught and tutored students for the past 20 years in all levels of mathematics from elementary school through advanced college courses. Whether you are a university student majoring in math or a parent looking for help for your child’s education, I can offer the expertise and support to meet your goals.
I started tutoring as a high school student, then was recruited to work for a tutoring center my freshman year of college. It was there that I discovered my passion for helping others learn. This passion inspired me to go to graduate school in order to become a professor. I have a PhD in mathematics from Colorado State University, and I was a professor of mathematics at Regis University in Denver Colorado for 7 years. Regis specializes in smaller class sizes that focus on student learning rather than asking professors to focus primarily on their research topic. After receiving tenure, I made a major life change and moved to a small town in the Pacific Northwest for family. Missing my students and teaching led me to look into math tutoring. Outside of mathematics, I’ve taught yoga, meditation, fitness, and Krav Maga (self-defense) to a wide range of people and ages. No matter what I do, I eventually seem to fall into a teaching role. Fall of 2023, I relocated to the Big Island of Hawaii with my family.
I am passionate about learning and helping others learn. I am patient with students of all ages and skill levels. I come armed with tools gained from my interest in education research as well as years of experimenting with contemplative practices in the classroom to support students in overcoming emotional hurdles to learning. I have helped advanced students looking to improve their understanding and grades as well as students who struggled with anxiety when trying to learn mathematics. Often, it isn’t the subject matter but the way the subject is taught amd presented that keeps people from succeeding.
Examples of mathematical subjects taught or tutored:
Arithmetic & pre-algebra
Algebra & Trigonometry
Geometry
Pre-calculus
Calculus (introductory through multivariable)
Differential equations
Complex analysis
Real analysis
Abstract algebra
Linear algebra
Contemporary mathematics
Statistics (introductory and advanced)
Probability
Discrete Mathematics
Logic & Proof
I delight in learning and in helping others learn. I enjoy getting to know other people and watching them gain confidence, grow, and succeed. I also love bringing enthusiasm and excitement into topics so that they come to life. Mathematics is fascinating, our world is fascinating, and I want others to catch my wonder!
I was recruited by the Colorado State University math department while a senior undergraduate because they did not have enough grad students to teach courses in their Pre-Calculus series. I then taught Calculus I, II, III and Differential Equations all throughout grad school and went on to become a professor of mathematics.
I took a course during my undergraduate that trained math tutors and proved to be invaluable to working with students one-on-one during my time as a graduate teaching assistant and my time as a professor of mathematics. I have a deep knowledge of mathematics stemming from my PhD and hundreds of hours of experience working with students during office hours to help guide them to better understanding. I've also continued to read about education research in order to better structure my approaches to teaching and tutoring to help students learn.

First, I like to hear from the student about where they feel strongest, where they feel like they could use help, and where they think they need to start. We'll decide on topics to cover for the first session. Then, working together on some mathematics helps me to asssess whether or not we need to back up and discuss any fundamentals or feel like the background material has been mastered. Also, working together helps me gage a student's general emotional approach to learning so that I know how to best support positive growth.
I've worked with elementary kids who were frustrated that their parents approached mathematics differently from their teachers. I've worked with high-achieving high school students who are trying to improve their math grades in order to get into the college of their choice. And, I have worked with countless college students in topics ranging from Algebra up through Real Analysis, some of whom struggled greatly with math anxiety, some of whom grappled with a weak background in mathematics and needed a lot of extra help, and some of whom were incredibly advanced and just needed little nudges from time to time.
You need a few key ingredients in a teacher: expertise, communication, patience, and kindness. The teacher needs to be fluent in the topic of interest, and hopefully curious and passionate about the topic so that they can help you get excited about it, too. They need to be able to communicate in terms you can understand, perhaps by drawing from your own interests to create examples. They need to be patient enough to let you do the work instead of jumping in to rescue you with an answer. And, they need to be kind enough to help you see your mistakes and fix them without making you feel slighted.
I love to hike and my partner and I decided to hike up to Appleton Pass starting rather late in the afternoon. At the pass, we spotted this high meadow and decided that is where we should eat dinner. (We almost always hike with a few slices of cold pizza to enjoy at the halfway point.) This meadow was smeared with wildflowers--lupine, arnica, Indian paintbrush, to name a few. You could see Mount Olympus in one direction, several sparkling lakes, and lots of wild peaks. We had it all to ourselves. We then hiked 8 miles back down, mostly in the dark. Stepping out into the parking lot at nearly midnight, far from any city lights, we were greeted by a massive backdrop of stars. It was spectacular.
I'm also very fond of eating the apple pie I baked a couple of days ago...
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Do I know why I am struggling? If so, how can I articulate it?
If I need help on a particular problem, can I pinpoint where in the problem? Is it with understanding what the problem is asking? Is it a particular step?
Where do I feel like my understanding is strong? Where do I feel like my understanding could improve?
What do my current study habits look like?

I wish there were more stars on this app because just 5 stars doesn't describe the tutoring experience with Bethany. Not only is she the most brilliant teacher, she also emphasizes kindness and compassion before anything else. Sometimes math can feel like a different language, but Bethany beautifully translates every topic to tangible explanations. She is the SparkNotes of all math topics -- show her any problem and she walks you through the formula, WHY it works, and guides you through example problems until you master the content. Scrolling past Bethany would be a mistake, she truly is a gift, use it!
I had Dr. Springer for three of my undergraduate math courses, and I am so glad I did!
She truly is a kind and intelligent teacher. She is patient with students as they learn and she uses fun examples to explain things along the way.
I originally struggled with some of my course material, but after meeting with her and asking questions, I succeeded in her class and was also well-prepared for my subsequent math classes.
In addition, Dr. Springer also held review/study sessions outside on her own time, which made it very clear that she cares about her students and their success.
I had her for introductory and advanced classes, and she showed that math at any level can be fun and easy to understand!
Dr. Springer has all the skills that would make a great tutor! She's an excellent teacher, I worked with Bethany for some of my hardest math classes, and she's great at breaking down complicated problems into simpler pieces. I've learned a lot from her.
