1: Enquire what aspect Mathematics the student need help with.
2: I ask some questions to access their previous knowledge and competence level in the topics they present.
3. Start tutoring by building on the knowledge they already possess and are very comfortable with.
4. After some tutoring the student and I will both agree on the how to access learning progress, maybe by quizzes or problems to attempt independntly.
I have worked with elementary, middle and high school students, as well as pre-degree and undergraduate students.
A good and interesting tutor is a necessary but an incomplete component to learning, just as important to that is a student willing to do what's needed to learn, and the things needed are not more than paying attention and practice and practice.
Learning is fun when you think about knowledge as a tool that gives us the power to create.
