About Matthew

Many people have skills to do various things, but not all can teach others how to do them. I can. I have taught a variety of activities in formal and informal settings for 35 years. Everything I have learned was once taught to me by someone, and I feel part of the chain in passing it on to others to share.

Unfortunately this requires me to self-promote sometimes: As a professional full-time land and sea flight instructor, I had a better than 98% pass rate and taught 77 students in 2018-2019. I have had many US and foreign students in schools, clubs, and universities at various locations in the US.

I have to pay to respond to inquiries, - both serious and tire-kicking. Before contacting me about flight training, please investigate the relative costs of it today, and plan to do the groundschool work first. Its cheaper that way, and tests your motivation! For perspective, a land-plane configuration can cist $160-$210 /flight hour and I make $55/hour for my time. For a Private Pilot license it takes a legal minimum of 40 hours, and about half of the required training is with sn instructor, - but the national average is about 73 hours. That is easily $15,000 or more! For a seaplane add-on rating you can budget $4000 or more, depending on insurance rates that year. Insurance is skyrocketing lately, and these costs are approximate and subject to change.

I have some tips for keeping costs down, because I had to fund all of my own training once also. I get it.

I am passionate about the activities I enjoy and want to share them with others to enjoy at a high proficiency level. This activity requires developing a serious safety-oriented mentality, and good habits make that much easier.

I emphasize overriding concepts over technicalities, because technical details fade with time, but the concepts persist. I speak to people at the level that they are, and try to build on it. I de-mystify the subject by introducing the jargon or buzzwords.

I remember that we were all students in a particular skill set at one time. We all started somewhere.

It began naturally as I participated in various activities.   In aviation, it was a necessary step to gaining flight time for  professional entry level qualifications.

BS in Architecture - (which only taught me how NOT to use jargon and B.S. to mystify and impress people).

1.   Get to know them.   Find out what level they are at currently, and what they are seeking.    How much time is available and what are their constraints?

2.   Map out an overview of what we will be trying to accomplish and how we'll go about it, including what they need to do, and what things are most important.

3.  Begin in a sequential and pedagogical way, asessing their pace of learning and offering tips, demonstrations, and insights while maintaining oversight of the situation at all times, so that I can protect them from their mistakes.   Allow small mistakes as learning moments, -while avoiding the big lethal ones! But it needs to stay challenging but fun.  Unless it is professionally oriented, this is a hobby.   When its not fun anymore, people quit.

Every type imaginable:   Kids, teens, professional adults, retired adults, seniors, foreign students, disabled adults.

It varies for each activity area:

Aviation:   Find someone who is a good TEACHER who has enough flight experience to impart good habits from the beginning, who enjoys teaching (not in it just for the flight time), and who is going to be around long enough for you to complete your training.   Someone who has been through a professional type-rating program is usually better qualified.

Karate:   Find someone who is not an egoist, who is still training hard for themselves, and who has trained with someone with a reputation.  It is too easy to impress people with very few skills in martial arts.

Firearms:  Find someone who is not an egoist and who has an attitude of safety discipline.   Safety is probably the most important thing you should be paying attention to initially.   Law knowledge, ethics, and then technical skills are next on the list.   A good ol' boy friend of a friend is not the best criteria...

A close personal friend being turned on to aviation and buying 3 airplanes (2 of them seaplanes) before even having a license to fly them.   He was bit by the bug hard!

Taking a friend and her 8 year old son to a shooting range and letting them try out shooting various weapons.

A house design client building their house addition and becomeing lifelong friends.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What are their goals?  What are they trying to accomplish?

What constraints do they have?  (time, money, availability, etc.)

Do they have any apprehensions, fears, personal limitations?

I generally need to earn about $50/hour + expenses to justify the expenses and time needed to meet people at their location.  Negotiable for various types of coursework.  Please investigete flight training cists prior to contacting me.  ( I hate being the bearer of sticker-shocking news so often).
