I have known Ms. Kathy LaTour for 13 years and have interacted with her extensively in her capacity as a professor at Southern Methodist University and as a continued source of writing expertise. As her student, I had no professional writing experience and very little confidence in my own ability. Ms. LaTour changed that. She makes time to meet with students outside of class and generously helps those working through challenges. (grammar , spelling and punctuation), information gathering (interviewing and research), critical thi nkin g, and style. An important aspect of Ms. LaTour' s interactions with students is her use of real-world examples from her career and consulting work. In her class, Strategic Writing for the Nonp rofit, she taught us the art of creating meaningful communication materials for nonprofits. I was able to use those pieces in my professional portfolio, which led to a job offer at a highly-competitive communications consulting firm in Washington, D.C. Since that time, Ms. LaTour has mentored me through teaching my first writing class at SMU. The lessons she taught me 13 years ago hold true in my class today and I find immense joy in supporting students in the very same manner that she supported her students.
