The pledge I make to everyone I work with is that I will always do my best to listen.

I’ve been a student for most of my life. Often, I found that I was treated like the copy-and-paste function to my instructor’s glossary of terms. There was no sympathy if my “V” key was was overused and sticking, no help if I accidentally pressed the Caps Lock button instead of Ctrl. I was meant to process an input and give an output, and if I couldn’t do it, I wasn’t given a computer technician who could look and see what was going on; I was given a ‘B.’

I think that’s more than unfair: I think it’s unkind. As a tutor, I strive to stand with the student, not as a computer technician, but rather as another keyboard who knows what it’s like to get assumptions instead of aid. I know from my own experiences how hard it is to try, to not succeed, and to not know why.

My goal is not to tell students what they should do. My goal is to understand what they are doing and to strategize with them about why they’re doing it, whether they want to be doing it, and what they should do next. At its core, my tutoring style is based on collaboration, centering the idea that while I might be an expert on the subject I’m teaching, my student is always the expert on themself. I prioritize exchange and strategization over prescription and rote conformity.

My greatest wish is that students leave my sessions feeling empowered and seen rather than confined and categorized. I hope to give them tools they can use outside of our sessions and after we conclude our time together, allowing them to enhance their own skills on their own time. I also strive to make the learning experience engaging and fun because we learn best when paying attention to information that is presented in a way that fits well with how we think and that makes us happy.

I've been a tutor for two years, working every week with a large variety of students on an even larger variety of subjects. I love the range of experiences this diversity brings to me, and I find myself learning something new about teaching during every single session. My favorite moments come when a student realizes that their work really is something to be proud or understands a new skill or lights up at the fact that they no longer need my assistance with something that once seemed like an insurmountable challenge.

I am happy to work on papers for all subjects but have a particular fondness for literature-based writing in particular. Most of my experience has involved one-on-one tutoring with older students, but I love working with people of all ages. I enjoy coming up with creative visual and kinetic ways of looking at concepts and pieces; sticky notes and mind-maps are dear friends of mine. As a teacher, I do my best to facilitate learning through joy, which is always a wonderful experience.

I began teaching in high school as a member of the robotics team after gaining a significant amont of programming experience. I spent much of my extracurricular time teaching my peers coding concepts and techniques with the help of our mentors; my love for out-of-the-box teaching methods began here.

I am two months away from graduating from Tufts University with a double major in English and Sociology. In April, I will defend a poetry thesis through the English department. During my time at Tufts, I have worked regularly as a Writing Fellow and as a Writing Consultant through the Tufts StAAR Center. I have also worked during the summer as a teaching assistant at Duke TIP, a camp that provides a combination of education and recreation. The program will unfortunately not be operating for the foreseeable future due to COVID-19. Nevertheless, you can find more information about the program here: (concealed information)

Finally, I have also held several internships related to editing within the publishing industry. Both of these internships focused on content evaluation and recognition of points of improvement in a given piece of work.

I have spent a significant amount of time with neurodivergent people both in an educational capacity and in my personal life. I myself have ADHD! I'm always delighted to work with non-neurotypical students and am happy to provide any accommodations that are needed.

About the lesson

I will usually ask new students to fill out the form linked below so I can get a sense of what they’re looking for in a tutor. In the case of younger students, parents are welcome to help fill out the form, but I request that they keep the answers they write down true to what the student wishes to convey and/or indicate which words are those of the student and which words are theirs’.

**Due to COVID-19, there are some additional questions on the form regarding your household’s policies about social distancing and safety. Please fill this out to the best of your ability and contact me if there is any other information you would like me to know. This does not apply to students who will be engaging in remote learning.**

Following this, I like to have an initial meeting with the student. Regardless of whether I will be tutoring them in person or online, I would prefer for this initial meeting to be conducted virtually. If this is not possible due to internet access, let me know and we can absolutely set up something else. At this meeting, I will discuss the student’s answers to the form as well as what they want to get out of our sessions. I welcome any information about extracurriculars and personal interests that the student would like to provide.

At the end of this meeting, we will schedule the first actual session.

I have worked as a tutor/teacher with students aged 12 and older. I have also worked in theater education with students between the ages of 5 and 14.

Trust your gut. You’re the expert on yourself and what you need-- and you’re allowed to ask for it! Don’t be afraid to say no, stand up for yourself, or politely decline anyone who makes you feel as though you are unwelcome or unworthy.

Also, I would advise against working with any tutor who says their favorite book is Atlas Shrugged. For many reasons.

Earlier today, my partner was holding a slice of lime. Our cat, who is a spoiled princess, has to sniff everything she wants to sniff. And she absolutely wanted to smell this slice of lime.

The problem, of course, is that our cat hates the smell of citrus fruit with a burning passion. My partner held down the lime for her to sniff and she eagerly smelled it before rearing back like a coiled spring and bolting away across the house in protest. My partner spent the next ten minutes washing his hands to try to get the lime smell off of them and apologizing to her profusely. She spent the next ten minutes running back and forth across the house and looking at him very suspisciously.

(Don’t worry, they made up a few minutes later. She’s now back to using him as her favorite bed while he works at his desk. All is well.)

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out

What, specifically, do you have difficulty with? Make a list and provide as many specific examples as you can.

Does your school have policies about learning accommodations? Make sure you know what they are so that you can set clear boundaries and so that you’re aware of any official channels of help that might be available to you.

What do you absolutely need? What would you prefer to have? What do you want? Figure out your answers. Ask for the maximum of what you want and settle for the maximum of what you need (if necessary).

Would an ally help? Do you want to have a practice discussion with a peer or have a trusted friend come with you for moral support? There’s never anything wrong with asking for help and support.

Are you ready? Take care of your mind, body, and emotions as much as you can, even if they aren’t directly connected to what you’re asking for. It’s okay not to be ready. It’s okay to be ready! It’s wonderful to be you.

Details

Usual cost: I usually hold hour-long sessions at $30/hr. Longer sessions have varying rates depending on the individual circumstances. Please inquire about discounts for long-term repeated scheduling and/or monthly rates.

Going over time: In cases that are not negotiated in advance, 5+ minutes over time results in a $10 fee; 30+ minutes over time results in a $20 fee; 60+ minutes overtime results in a $30 fee. Time will be counted based on when we actually start the session, not when the session is technically scheduled to begin.

Cancellation: Clients are offered a one-time grace period. After that period, the policy is as follows--

Cancellations 24+ hours in advance have no charge associated. Day-of cancellations given at least two hours before the start time of the session have a charge of $20. Cancellations given less than two hours before the start time of the session will be charged full price. Charges are negotiable in cases of significant emergencies.

**Being late by more than 30 minutes results in a cancellation.**

Other charges: I charge $15 per hour of prep work that I must do for a given session. This is usually only applicable in cases where I have to conduct a significant amount of outside research in order to help the student.
