About Lisa-Michele
As a certified teacher with over a decade of experience, I understand how young minds learn, the best practices to improve their academic performance, and the skills they need to be successful scholars. I've taught students from grades K-8 in private and public schools, both in the US and overseas. While overseas, my school served students from countries around the world. I have accumulated a wealth of resources to assist scholars as well.
I am always amazed at the variety of ways students learn and enjoy experiencing "the hundred languages," a key metaphor in the Reggio Emilia approach to learning. It states that young learners are "individuals who are capable of doing and communicating thei unique abilities in extraordinary ways." Working one-to-one or in small groups makes it easier to hear what scholars need and respond as their tutor in educational, engaging, and entertaining ways.
I'm professionally certified in childhood education by the State of New York and have over a decade of teaching experience with general and EL students. Additionally, I am an educational writer and editor, and have created editorial and design content and assessments in ELA, math, science, and social studies.

It's important to me to spend time getting to know a student. During the first session, 5-10 minutes will be spent just talking about the student's interests, likes, motivators, distrators, what they like/don't like about school, etc. The student will also learn a bit about me. This is also a type of informal assessment, to be followed by an assessment of the student's strengths, weaknesses, skills, and understanding of the session's subject(s). Initially, I like to look at the content that the student is struggling with, via assined readings and homework (or work done is class). Together, we discuss skills strategies that will lead to clearer comprehension and work on strengthening those skills. Quick/small oral or written formative assessments during the session will be given to reinforce what's been learned. Future sessions will dive into the content much more rapidly, but will follow the same format. If possible, I like to include multi-media powerpoints and other internet tools as applicable.
