About Christine
I have experience tutoring in English K-12, and working with college students on all kinds of written assignments. I can help you understand what you're reading, apply what you know to writing, and refine your writing style so that you can communicate your ideas confidently and effectively. If you're having difficulty with grammar or useage, I can help you understand not just the rules, but why the rules are important for clarity.
I truly believe that reading and writing are among the most important skills for a person to have, regardless of their college goals, career aspirations, or life choices. I love helping people hone those skills and become more confident in themselves.
I love seeing a student go from confused or frustrated to excited. The most rewarding thing about tutoring is watching that "aha!" moment happen when a student realizes what they want to write about, has an idea on how to tie an essay or story together, or has an insight into what they're reading.
I have a BA in English, and I worked at the Undergraduate Writing Center while I was there, helping peers write and refine their papers. I also worked for a tutoring center, teaching kids K-12 English.

First, I will determine precisely what it is that they want help with, and which parts are confusing or challenging. Then, we'll break that down into steps. We will always work together through this whole process--I will never lecture or dictate exactly what to do. English is all about an individual, so I want to know a student's take on the passage, how they want to approach their essay, and so forth. We'll go forward based on the student's feedback as well as what I feel is important in their individual situation.
I've worked with all sorts of students, from seniors in college to children still learning to grasp a pencil. I've tutored students whose first language is not English, students who haven't been asked to do an essay in years, and students who really would prefer to be doing math.
Go for someone who values your input. English is not about getting the right answer--yes, even when analyzing literature! You want someone who will tell you "good idea!" or "I never thought about it like that!" Avoid the tutors who shut down your thoughts or insist that their way is the only proper way to do it.
