About Tish

Hi everyone, and thanks for stopping by! Whether you're a an elementary school (or younger) student who needs help with reading, high school or college age who requires assistance with literature and essay writing and editing, or someone across all ages who needs ESL assistance, I'm here for you! For younger kids (and parents who need help these days with the demands of distance learning) I bring fun and energy to what might have become a boring and lonely journey in our current pandemic atmosphere, so sitting in front of the computer won't be so boring with me :) For tweens - college age, I've got a depth of knowledge of literature and can help with theme, structure and editing--and I love collaborating with students. And for people of all ages, from 4 or 5 through their 50s and 60s who need ESL assistance, I'm Cambridge ESOL-certified through Oxford House in Barcelona, where I taught and tutored English as a second language from 2015 -2018. I bring energy and fun to my sessions, discussing and helping in a wide range of subjects so you will never be bored, and am empathetic to the struggle to learn another language, as I was learning Spanish while teaching English. Please consider me for your tutoring needs :)

I love the English language. I love that it can be molded into whatever the user wants: from Shakespeare to Winnie the Pooh to Kanye it has no limits. It is fresh and adaptable and fun--characteristics I believe I share in the approach I take to teaching, collaborating, and engaging with my students. Whether you're an overwhelmed parent whose child needs help with reading, or have more advanced needs, there is nothing I like more than to help you find your own success.

Aside from assisting in my son's school and with his own work and assignments from childhood through college (and he is now a tutor himself!) my personal journey as a teacher really started when I enrolled in Oxford House in Barcelona in 2015 in order to become TESOL certified. I had always wanted to teach ESL and my experience with a wide range of students did not disappoint. I think they would all agree that I was a fun, accessible, and energetic teacher who engaged and encouraged and ultimately helped them improved their spoken English as well as student and business assignments. In addition I ran a discussion group for highly fluent English speakers, with topics ranging from New York Times articles, film, TED Talks, poetry, philosophy and areas of personal interest.

I'm new to this website so I don't have reviews here (yet) and I'm setting up this profile without contacting my previous students in Barcelona. But as an overview, my BA is in dramatic literature and theory, and I'm a very well-read person with a love of children's literature, the classics and 20th-century American literature. You'll see from my LinkedIn profile that my professional career is mostly in television and web production which included writing and/or editing scripts. With regard to my teaching credentials, I'm Cambridge TESOL certified through Oxford House in Barcelona, where I taught English as a second language from 2015 - 2018. I also (pre-pandemic) was a spin instructor from 2012 - 2020, which is also teaching! My method in spin is the same: motivating and making a daunting task fun. I have not worked as a tutor since my return to the US in 2018, but with the rising need for teachers since the pandemic, I've realized how vital this help is and am volunteering for lower-income ESL children in my community as well as offering my services here.

I want to learn about you, your interests, how you learn and what motivates you, and we take it from there. If you're a beginning reader (and mom or dad is reading this) I help with sounding out the words and finding books of interest, and making sure the student is happy and engaged. We work around frustrations until we find the right approach. With older students I make sure I understand the assignment, and if it's an essay or writing assignment will undertake to read the book or assignment content myself. I help with structure, grammar, vocabulary and engagement; I don't want to do the work for you, but collaborate and pull ideas out of you :)
