About Sophia
Hi! My name is Sophia and I'm a chess player located in Ottawa. I have been playing chess for five years and have a peak CFC classical rating of 1700. My online rating is 1800-2000 on chess.com across all time controls. I have played major chess tournaments such as the Canadian Women's Championship and the Canadian Transnational Open.
I have years of experience as a professional chess tutor, with a focus on teaching beginners, children and groups. I was a chess instructor with STEM the Gap Academy, where I taught chess to a group of children ages 5-12.
Outside of coaching, I was President of the Carleton University Chess Club for two years and I am entering my first year of law school at the University of Ottawa this fall. I am passionate about growing the community and sharing my love for chess.

My lessons are designed for players of all levels to develop their chess skills and learn new strategies. Lessons typically last an hour and are weekly or biweekly. I use interactive learning to provide the best experience for students. A typical lesson would involve half an hour of learning new strategies and concepts, followed by half an hour of applying these strategies in real games.
Based on preferences, topics could include:
-Tactics and Puzzles
-Endgame study
-Custom opening strategies and recommendations
-Game analysis

Sophia is an excellent chess player who has been dedicated to developing the Carleton chess club through multiple years and executive positions. She is a strong communicator and I have observed her successfully teaching many players the art of chess!
Future wgm on everything. Played her over the board dozens of time and never managed to beat her. Her knowledge of endgames is exceptionally good.

I met Sophia at our university chess club. She's one of the strongest players in the club, and performed the best out of the 20-odd people who competed in the last tournament we attended. She's funny, entertaining and incisive, and livens up the occasionally dry world of analysis. Also, she has the experience to tell you what you really need to improve! For all the time I've known her, she's been level, supportive and fun, always pushing you to go beyond. A great person to have in your corner, and a teacher worth investing in.
