As a student returning to school after a long hiatus, my writing skills needed some dusting off to reach their highest potential. I met Dr. Karen Kurt Teal in one of my first classes upon my return to college.
In a tech writing class, she gently nudged clarity, authenticity of voice, and technical perfection out of my writing drafts. Often, these drafts became more engaging as they lost unnecessary, superfluous embellishment.
Kindness underpinned her edits. As a published author, she understood how attached writers get to their words and compassionately urged clarity over word count.
Her personal mastery of many writing types allowed her to share her perspective with ease.
As a bonus, her wicked sharp sense of humor lightened every interaction.

I had the privilege to have Karen Teal as my teacher for the Technical Writing class of the Biomedical Regulatory Affairs Master’s program at the University of Washington. Professor Teal’s class had a critical impact on my professional writing skills in general. Her class exposed and prepared students to a variety of writing platforms, including regulatory documents, real world exercises, analytical essays, and various forms of communications. All this extensive curriculum did not prevent Professor Teal’s class from being dynamic, interactive, and fun. I was always very enthusiast to go to her class, even after a long day at work.
