(EARLY STAGES / FIRST SESSION)
1. I always begin with some small talk about things happening in the student's life (school, friends, plans for the weekend, etc) to ease the student into the session
2. Then I'll get into what the student is learning at school / on their own time in order to get a sense of what the student is currently struggling with and what they feel confident in. It is important to remind the student of not only their weaknesses but also their strengths to maintain a sense of confidence.
3. Setting achievable goals with the student and creating a plan to achieve those goals using the STAR method (situation, task, action, result). As a general rule of thumb, I like to focus the goals around what the student is learning in school since it is content they are already familiar with and will likely be tested on. Organizing lesson plans in this manner will optimize their academic performance. For instance, if the student is being taught a certain grammatical tense (e.g. passé composé) and they are struggling with that, then the goal I'd outline is to have the student be able to write half a paragraph on a topic of their choice in passé composé. This would ensure that they are completely familiar with the grammatical structure of this tense and how to apply it in writing. Another goal could be to have the student give a minute-long presentation using passé composé. Once again, the goal will be specific to the student's weaknesses, and upcoming academic milestones.
(LATER SESSIONS)
4. The lesson plan will be based on the goals set above. As such, it will vary depending on the student and their learning styles. If we go based on the example of learning passé composé, visual learners may benefit from the usage of flashcards (which I will provide), writing about their day in passé composé or reading short stories written in passé composé. I am a strong advocate for learning through application, hence simply looking at the proper grammatical conjugations online and having the students plainly memorize those is meaningless. I will be using various online resources such as stories, audio exercises, and custom worksheets for students so that my students can apply their knowledge and become fluent in the language far quicker
5. Through my experience, I've found that the quickest way to learn a language is to listen to it and try to speak it. Over time your brain naturally adapts and you subconsciously pick up on sentence structure and vocabulary. As such, I'll be speaking as much French as possible depending on the student's level. Using French expressions and reiterating phrases in English where needed. I will push my students to engage with me in French as well and aim to have at least one full French interaction each session, no matter how small.

Hareem helped me so much with grade 11 functions. She really knows how to break down problems and work with you to get through them. I started out the semester getting 60s but with her help, I passed with a 90! I highly recommend and definitely will be signing up for more sessions when I start Advanced functions!
