About Thomas
I'm Thomas Allen, a pianist, teacher, composer, and conductor based in the Cary area. I earned a Master's degree in Music and Music Education from Columbia University's Teachers College and a Bachelor's degree in Piano Performance from the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University. I also completed a Professional Certificate in Injury-Preventive Keyboard Technique at Salem College and studied orchestral conducting with the principal conductor of the Yale Symphony Orchestra.
With over a decade of professional experience, I perform, teach, and compose across classical, musical theater, pop, rock, jazz, and liturgical styles. I bring this same versatility to my teaching, along with expertise in music theory, aural skills, accompaniment, choir, and conducting.
My goal is to help talented, driven students achieve musical excellence, grow personally and artistically, and share their love of music with the world.

I hold a Master's degree in Music and Music Education from Columbia University's Teachers College and a Bachelor's in Piano Performance from the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University. With over a decade of professional experience, I tailor every lesson to the individual student, whether you're a complete beginner or an advanced pianist preparing for an audition.
A typical lesson starts with a short warm-up and a review of your current pieces, then moves into new repertoire, technique, and music theory or ear training as needed. You'll leave each week knowing exactly what to practice and why.
I teach classical, pop, rock, jazz, and musical theater styles, so you can learn the music you actually love while building a strong foundation. I also specialize in healthy, injury-preventive technique, so you can play comfortably for years to come.
My lessons are for students of all ages and levels who want real progress, personal growth, and a genuine love of music.

Thomas is a wonderful instructor! Starting lessons as an adult is daunting, but Thomas really makes each lesson both enjoyable and informative. He covers both the basics, like how to read music, and more advanced concepts, like the proper way to strike a key. He is really receptive to my own needs and tastes, tailoring the lessons to the type of music I would eventually like to play. Even though I'm starting from scratch, Thomas makes me believe I can actually play real music!
During college, I had the fortunate opportunity to study with Thomas Allen. He is patient, thorough, and concerned about the entire health of the performer. Knowing the impact that poor technique can have on pianists, I learned the importance of being released and free while playing.
