Find out more about Malik Umair

  • 1) Can you tell us about your first experience using a computer?

My first experience using a computer was during my elementary school years, and it quickly transitioned from intimidation to profound fascination. What captivated me was the computer's power as a tool for creation and persistence. I vividly remember the simple yet powerful act of typing and saving a document in Microsoft Word. This immediate digital manifestation of my thoughts, and the fact that it was instantly preserved, sparked a lifelong curiosity. This initial moment was not about complex programming but about realizing the fundamental utility of a machine to capture, organize, and store information, which ultimately laid the foundation for my passion for computer science and my career as an educator.
  • 2) What is the technological evolution that has marked you most and what will be, in your eyes, a turning point in this field?

The technological evolution that has marked me most is the widespread institutional adoption of Object-Oriented Programming (OOP). While the concepts have been around for a long time, their dominance revolutionized modern software engineering by providing principles like encapsulation, inheritance, and polymorphism to manage complexity. As someone who teaches OOP at the university level, I recognize it as the essential architectural framework that made large-scale, collaborative, and maintainable software development possible. In my eyes, the next major turning point will be the democratization of Generative AI and Large Language Models (LLMs). These tools are fundamentally changing the coding process itself, shifting the primary development focus from writing repetitive lines of code to high-level problem-solving and prompt-based design. This transition will dramatically accelerate development and make strong foundational skills in Data Structures and Algorithms (DSA) even more critical for optimizing and validating AI-generated solutions.
  • 3) Explain your expertise, your interest in it and, more broadly, its importance in the computer world.

My core expertise lies in Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) and Data Structures and Algorithms (DSA), skills I have leveraged as a Lab Engineer at Bahria University and a Senior Coding Instructor. My interest is fueled by the sheer power and elegance of these two fields: OOP provides the clean, scalable structure needed to model real-world problems in software, while DSA offers the analytical tools to ensure those models run with optimal efficiency. More broadly, their importance is paramount. DSA is the ultimate determinant of a program’s performance and scalability—it’s what allows complex systems to handle millions of users or terabytes of data quickly. OOP is the standard for maintainability and collaboration in the industry, enabling large teams to build and update complex software sustainably. These concepts are not just academic subjects; they are the essential building blocks for all competitive and high-quality software development.
  • 4) Do so-called 'visionaries', such as Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg inspire you or do you have other role models?

I hold great respect for the historical impact and scale of innovation achieved by industry visionaries like Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and Mark Zuckerberg, who fundamentally reshaped the way the world interacts with technology. However, my primary inspiration as an educator and technical practitioner comes from individuals who demonstrate mastery in communicating technical knowledge and advancing the open community. I am deeply inspired by leading computer science researchers who push the theoretical boundaries of the field, and by tireless Open Source contributors who dedicate themselves to building foundational tools and documentation for the next generation of developers. I strive to emulate this focus on both intellectual rigor and community contribution in my own work, especially through teaching and content creation.
  • 5) What would you say to an uncomfortable person in front of a screen who says that "IT is too complicated"?

I would respond with assurance and a clear, actionable path: "I completely understand that feeling, and you are not alone. When you look at the entirety of IT, it can seem like an overwhelming wall of complexity. My promise to you is that IT is not a mystical art; it is a system of logic built on small, manageable steps." I would then explain my personalized approach: "We won't start by trying to tackle that whole wall. We will break it down into simple, visual concepts. In fact, I have experience developing a platform, CODY, which uses block-based programming to introduce coding to beginners, allowing you to master the logic without worrying about complex syntax. The feeling of 'too complicated' simply means you need a better guide. Together, we will redefine that feeling into 'I see the logic now,' transforming that anxiety into a sense of accomplishment."
  • 6) What are your other passions, related or non-related to computers?

I actively maintain a balanced life, feeding both my analytical and physical well-being. Passions related to computers include Technical Writing—a skill I've honed professionally—which forces me to distill complex ideas into clean, concise language, directly benefiting my tutoring clarity. I am also deeply committed to Practicing Mathematics, as it consistently sharpens the logical and problem-solving muscle critical for algorithmic development. Outside of technology, my passions include participating in sports, specifically Playing Cricket, which serves as an excellent way to engage in teamwork and stay physically fit. Finally, I dedicate time to my community by volunteering in local social drives, such as Plantation & Winter Drives, which provides a meaningful connection to my environment and reinforces my commitment to contributing beyond the digital world.
