About Gil
Hi! I am a liberal arts graduate with Phi Beta Kappa and Summa Cum Laude distinction. I am skilled at communication and using creative approaches to get kids excited to learn. I’m in my fourth year of private school teaching. For two years I was a teacher, adviser, and dorm parent at a New England boarding school, where I developed skills in executive functioning coaching and mentorship. I have designed and taught dynamic science courses for middle and high schoolers with differentiation for students with language-based learning differences. Currently I work at a premier independent school in Chicago as a learning specialist, supporting students and teachers with math and writing teaching. Please reach out if you are interested. I've never taught a boring lesson. I know what it's like to wonder "what's the point," so I generally cut to the chase and tell you why it's important that we learn the content at hand. This sometimes involves me relating the material to something I know you care about. It may involve me telling you about some relevant current event/discovery. Then we will make a game plan and cut to the chase. I don't like doing one task for longer than 50 minutes, so we can figure out how to distribute our bandwidth between assignments to capitalize on our attention span. My goal is to get you in the headspace of anticipating "what's next" on an assignment and in class, so before we finish a session we'll do some previewing and make a plan for getting things done and staying ahead. Then I'll be available if you have any questions.
