About Tom
Hi, I’m Tom – a friendly, patient chemistry tutor with a 1st class Master’s degree in Chemistry and several years of experience in both academic and industrial labs (UCL, Pfizer, Cardiff). I specialise in helping students who feel “stuck” or overwhelmed turn chemistry into something logical, manageable and enjoyable. I genuinely like working 1:1 with students: understanding how they think, spotting the gaps, and tailoring explanations to suit them. Helping someone unlock their potential in a subject as powerful as chemistry feels meaningful to me, and tutoring gives me the time and space to do that properly – something that isn’t always possible in a busy classroom or lab.

Chemistry Tutor – 1:1 Support for GCSE, A-Level & University Students (Online & In Person) Hi, I’m Tom – a friendly, patient chemistry tutor with a 1st class Master’s degree in Chemistry and several years of experience in both academic and industrial labs (UCL, Pfizer, Cardiff). I specialise in helping students who feel “stuck” or overwhelmed turn chemistry into something logical, manageable and (dare I say it) enjoyable. What I tutor • GCSE Chemistry / Combined Science • A-Level Chemistry • Undergraduate chemistry support (physical, inorganic, organic, lab reports, data analysis) • Study skills & exam technique for chemistry • Optional: Intro to coding/data for chemists (e.g. using Python to analyse experimental data) ⸻ My teaching approach 1. Start with why, not just what I don’t just throw formulae at you. I explain why things work the way they do – from electron configurations to reaction mechanisms – so topics become a logical story rather than a collection of facts to memorise. 2. Break big topics into small, clear steps Difficult ideas (like equilibrium, acids/bases, redox, spectroscopy) are broken into clear, bite-sized chunks. We build from what you already know, filling any gaps as we go, so you don’t feel lost or “behind”. 3. Active learning, not passive note-taking You’ll spend a lot of the session actually doing chemistry: • working through exam-style questions together • drawing mechanisms, structures and energy profiles • interpreting graphs, data and spectra I guide you through the thinking process so you learn how to tackle new questions on your own. 4. Exam-focused, but truly understanding the content We’ll use: • real past paper questions • mark schemes and examiner reports • proven exam techniques (checking units, common traps, timing, how to structure long answers) The goal is not just to get the right answer once, but to understand how you got there so you can repeat it under exam pressure. 5. Tailored to you In the first session I’ll ask: • what exam board/level you’re doing • which topics you find hardest • how you like to learn Then I plan sessions around your needs: whether that’s fixing weak topics, building confidence with calculations, or pushing top grades with more challenging questions. 6. Encouraging, honest and down-to-earth Chemistry can be intimidating, and lots of bright students end up thinking they’re “just bad at science”. I don’t believe that. My style is: • calm and non-judgemental • honest about what needs work • focused on building confidence lesson by lesson You’re allowed to ask “silly” questions. That’s how people learn. ⸻ How lessons work • Format: Online (Zoom/Teams) or in-person near Dartford / SE London (depending on location) • Length: Typically 1 hour (longer sessions available before exams) • Resources: I provide questions, summaries, worked examples and can set optional homework between sessions ⸻ Interested? Send me a message with: • your level (GCSE / A-Level / Uni) • your exam board (if known) • a few topics you’re struggling with I’ll get back to you with suggested next steps and we can arrange a first session. Looking forward to helping you make chemistry click.
