About Ashley
I am fresh out of the classroom this year and working instead in a shelter in Seattle currently. I speak Spanish daily in my work as an educator of immigrant youth and English is my native language. I grew up in the Midwest- Minnesota and Iowa- and I spent time teaching all over the world- Chicago, Indonesia, Nicaragua. I love learning more and more about my second language- Spanish- all of the time and believe fluency is a lifelong journey. I enjoy exploring languages and getting to know new people and cultures.

My experiences teaching languages so far have led me to create a style of teaching that leans into communicative tasks- though, I do use both reading and writing skill-building to strengthen vocabulary, grammar, and cultural knowledge. It is important to have a goal each lesson and those goals will often center around functions of a language (introducing a friend or describing a past event, for example). I focus on small sets of vocabulary, slowly learned through practices that are personalized to your level of proficiency. I also believe it is important to design lessons that aim to be enjoyable so your learning experience is less stressful. It can be hard enough just to learn a language!
