About Afiq
Hello there, I’m Afiq! I’m a recent Natural Sciences (Physiology and Applied Clinical Research) graduate from the University of Cambridge. I tutor (I)GCSE and A-Level Chemistry, covering topics such as atomic structure and bonding, quantitative chemistry, energetics, kinetics, equilibria, acids and bases, organic chemistry and spectroscopy.
Confession: for a long time, I got through subjects by rote memorisation because I didn’t really understand them. It worked right up until an exam question was worded differently. Discovering what it feels like to truly understand something changed how I learn, and it is the reason I want to teach. I believe education, when done properly, is one of the most empowering things a person can have. Once a concept genuinely clicks, it belongs to you, and you can take on problems you have never seen before. Making that happen for my students is my personal mission.
I have been tutoring since 2022, starting with IGCSE students and then preparing applicants for Cambridge admissions interviews. I try not to ask “does that make sense?” because nobody has ever answered that honestly anyway. Instead, I will ask you to explain it back to me. Parents can expect clear progress updates, and students can expect a patient, honest tutor who will never settle for “just memorise it”.

Lessons usually last 1 hour, although I'm flexible with adjusting to the particular session's objectives. Throughout my experience of tutoring IGCSE students for a year, I used 4 evidence-backed techniques to tap into students' max learning potential:
1. Retrieval practice: at the start of each session, I test your recall of our previous classes. That strengthens your memory more than rereading the same material again and again.
2. Worked examples: a fully worked solution often beats unaided attempts for newly learnt material. Once your competence grows, I remove the scaffold progressively to promote confident independence.
3. Formative assessments: I ask questions that not only assess your current understanding, but also reveal common misconceptions in certain topics. That differentiates rote memorisation and genuine understanding.
4. Metacognition: I teach students to plan, monitor and evaluate their own revisions (and by extension, their thought processes). I think this is arguably the most empowering skill any person could have.

Ive known Afiq ever since we were in college few years back, and i could gladly tell you he's probably one of the best person ever when it comes to teaching. Its in the way he really takes an interest in whether you fully understand what he teaches you, and he really takes his time in explaining theories and the answers.
