About Hugo
I’m a native French speaker originally from Geneva, Switzerland, and I’ve been living in New York City for more than four years. I graduated from The New School with a Bachelor’s degree in Jazz Performance and have been working professionally as a musician and drummer in New York and internationally.
Moving to New York and studying and working in an English-speaking environment has given me a very personal experience of learning, adapting to, and communicating in another language. I know how important it is to be able to practice a language in a comfortable environment and to not be afraid of making mistakes. I’ve also had the opportunity to work with people from many different countries and backgrounds through music, which has taught me a lot about communication and cultural differences.
As a tutor, I bring that same openness and patience to my lessons. I want students to feel comfortable, motivated, and confident while learning French. Whether you want to improve your conversation skills, prepare for school or travel, or simply become more comfortable speaking French, I adapt my lessons to your needs and make the learning process as engaging and practical as possible.

My teaching approach is very adaptable and centered around each student’s level, goals, and way of learning. As a native French speaker from Geneva, Switzerland, I want to make learning French feel natural, practical, and enjoyable rather than overwhelming or overly academic.
I usually adapt each lesson depending on what the student wants to improve. We can work on conversation and pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, reading, writing, or simply practice speaking French in a relaxed environment. I like to use real-life situations, conversations, and topics that are interesting to the student, so that the language feels useful and connected to everyday life.
Having learned English myself and moved to New York more than four years ago, I understand the challenges that come with learning and using a language in a different environment. I know how important it is to feel comfortable making mistakes and practicing without being afraid of getting things wrong. My goal is to create a positive and encouraging environment where students can build confidence, improve naturally, and develop a genuine connection with the French language and culture.
My lessons are suitable for beginners, intermediate and advanced students, and can be adapted to different ages, needs, and goals.
