About Matt
I am a PhD Researcher and active Undergraduate Lecturer at the University of Bristol. Alongside my academic work, I have spent years working on the ground in the international development and NGO sectors, leading multi-country programs and delivering advocacy interventions to the United Nations.
My approach to teaching is built on bridging the gap between academic theory and real-world practice. I want to show both A-Level and university students that politics, history, and international relations are living, breathing dynamics—not just facts trapped inside a textbook.
Because I actively deliver university seminars and mark undergraduate scripts, I know exactly what top-tier Russell Group universities are looking for. For my A-Level students, I focus heavily on decoding rigid exam mark schemes, mastering essay structure, and developing the critical source analysis skills needed to secure A/A* grades. For my undergraduate students, I provide advanced coaching on assignment structure, argument building, and dissertation design.
I don't believe in rote memorisation. Whether you are a university student aiming for a First, or an A-Level student pushing for top grades to unlock your firm university choice, I provide clear, high-impact guidance tailored to your specific goals.

Lessons are completely relaxed, warm, and structured around friendly, open conversation. I don’t believe in dry, rigid learning; instead, we use engaging academic discussion to break down complex theories into simple, logical pieces. Every session is custom-built to match your exact module, essay brief, or exam focus.
What We Can Focus On:
Undergraduates: Demystifying essay structuring, improving academic tone, handling qualitative data, and building bulletproof arguments for your dissertations and assignments.
A-Level Students: Decoding exactly what markers want to see, expanding your case studies with real-world examples, and mastering timed essay layouts.
Total Flexibility to Suit Your Schedule:
Where: I am happy to meet for face-to-face sessions in Bath or conduct interactive, flexible lessons over Zoom.
When: Sessions are fully adaptable to your weekly workload—ranging anywhere from a sharp 30-minute essay-structure review to a deep-dive 2-hour dissertation planning block.

Matt has been my teacher for 3 years now, and he’s extremely effective. A creative and engaged mind - every time I didn’t get a topic, he’d switch his approach and help me learn through whatever way worked best for me. Would highly recommend if you’re looking to learn complex topics and ensure that knowledge sticks!
Matt was a brilliant tutor. He helped my son with his History and Science GCSEs. It wasn’t just that he had a fantastic and secure knowledge of the subjects, he also had an excellent rapport with my son.
Matt made each session engaging and pitched them appropriately so that my son was able to learn and make progress throughout; he really did enjoy these sessions and I have no doubt that Matt had a significant impact on my son’s enjoyment and success in these subjects.View more recommendations
