About Humes
I enjoy helping athletes get a better understanding of the game of basketball; my goal is to assist kids in making teams, getting in games, staying in games and contributing to wins.
Its about being the best basketball player possible, not ball handler, not a shooter, not a scorer; but a basketball player. I can help a player develop in all those areas; but what i want is to provide context so that a player can have a better court iq and sense of awareness that maximize their skills and abilities.
I provide context, i provide support both during sessions and outside of them; i want to help develop confidence in these young athletes that will stay with them while they play the game and spills over into other aspects of life...
Most competitive teams don't have the time to develop the kids skill sets, the time spent during practice is spent on conditioning or teaching the kids offensive or defensive plays.
There simply isn't enough time for the coaches to work with kids individually on things like shooting, dribbling, passing catching, moving without the ball, how to create space, etc.
At a certain point coaches expect kids to have an understanding of the game and a skillset; if the kid doesn't have that, the kid has no real chance of making the team, much less getting any sort of playing time.
So I took it upon myself to start developing kids' overall skill sets, so when the level of competition increased or the circumstances required my kids to be able to do more than previously asked; they would be able to execute.
As I worked with kids I noticed other kids, who lacked experience or didn't have top end size or athleticism, being overlooked or under coached; i decided to expand my efforts to help those kids who aren't getting the time or attention to be the best players they can be.
I have coached rec league and AAU ball middle school and highschool, boys and girls; a lot of my approach to development is influenced by my experiences being ahead and assistant coach.

I talk to the student, find out their level of experience, the position(s) they have played, their level of skill and what skills they want to develop as a player.
A lot of my process is getting a feel for the student I am teaching and giving them a better understanding of how I view the game. Increasing their basketball IQ, can help put them in a position to become a better player and a contributing member of a Middle School, High School, or AAU team.
I've worked with a diverse group of kids. From middle school, to high school, high school grads and college students. I have worked with kids who just want to play and I have worked with kids who are serious ballers. I have worked with AAU players, freshman, JV and varsity players. I've worked with kids with a variety of skill levels; some kids who were very good athletes others who were closer to average or below average athletes.
The secret to development is finding someone who believes in you and will give you their best effort regardless of your size, experience or talent; someone who won't just show you moves, but will provide context as to how what why and wheres of what they are showing you.
I tend to develop versatile / high IQ / situationally aware players; kids I train often have their fingerprints all over the game they rebound box out play on ball playoff ball defend pass and play make. Whatever they can do to get on the floor stay on the floor and help contribute to wins or put their team in position to win the kids I train are generally willing and able to do that. Obviously they shoot and score but that's the thing that most players want to do and it's much easier to get traction and have success when your able to do a variety of things than most players aren't willing to do compared to trying to do one or two things that every player is trying to do.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
How hard am i willing to work?
What is the end goal?
Am I aware of my strengths and weakness as a player?
Am I willing to listen to an honest assessment from an outside party in regards to my skillset?
What separates this teacher from others?
I am a very good communicator and I teach kids how to take the skills they have and get the most out of them, then figure out what skills and style of play needed to get them to the level they want to be at as a player.

Perfect! I’ve searched for, and had my boys work with several trainers. Schwan is above and beyond, an outstanding teacher. Not the usual “cookie cutter” methods you see from so many. Schwan takes time and interest in knowing every kid personally. His honesty is evident immediately. He listens to all parties involved. He presents an individual approach that is sincere. He sincerely cares about a young athlete off the court, as well as on. He sees the big picture to success, not just the numbers so many are obsessed with. He understands and stresses fundamentals, as a path to overall polish within the game. I can honestly say you won’t find anyone more committed to the development of your young athlete!

I liked how much time and attention he gave my daughter; he made it a point to not just show moves or run drills, but explain the what whys and hows behind them.
He definitely made basketball fun for her and dramatically improved her confidence by identifying her game, then building off of that.
The specific improvements schwan made to my daughters game are as such...
1)shooting- he improved her shooting touch and he extended her shooting range. Prior to working with schwan she never hit a shot outside of 4-5 ft, after schwan i witnessed her hit from 7-10-13-15ft consistently
2)rebound- my daughter positioning and timing as a rebounder improved tremendously, she is averaging three more rebounds a game than she did last year
3) Moving without the ball- previously my daughter had a hard time scoring because she would be stationary; now she is active and efficient in her movement creating alot of easy shots.
4)Passing the ball- she used to turn the ball over because she would hold the ball or she would take bad shots, now she is pushing the ball down the court and finding the open man in half court.
5) IQ-her understanding of her game and the game as a whole has really improved; she can explain what she is doing and why she is doing it. That is a big reason for her confidence/comfort as a player...I like the fact that Schwan made sure to stress fundamentals, court awareness and smart play; he kept his message simple and his drills to the point. The most impressive thing is that everything he showed them, from spots on the floor to shoot from, fakes, passes and defensive manuever were able to be used as he taught them in game.
I like the confidence he developed in my kids and the fact he reignited their joy for the game...
I come from a family of ball players and coaches, so my take on the training may be different from others who don't have that sort of background. I find that many trainers teach moves, they don't take anything else into consideration. That hurts the childs playing time, development and confidence; with Schwan i didnt see any of that, he made it a point to teach my kids skills that took into account their position, their role on the team and their physical tools. He always explained how something work, why it worked, and in what situations it should be used in. My kids arent dynamic players, but they have become much more efficient and intelligent ball players; schwan has helped them develop games that play to their strengths and minimized their weaknesses. I appreciate his dedication to my children, his attention to detail; most importantly i appreciate his belief in my kids and the confidence he instilled in them.
Very committed to my kids in a way that a lot of trainers hadn't been, many trainers want a certain caliber of athlete, a certain size athlete, a certain amount of skill in an athlete; if they don't see those things, they won't give their best to them in regards to building confidence, developing skills and working them hard. Schwan gave them a hundred percent and not just improved their understanding of the game, their skill in playing the game; but their confidence in playing the game and their confidence off the court.
Schwan helped my children get better as players across the board (rebounding, passing, defending, shooting, dribbling, moving without the ball); more importantly he helped them become better and more confident people.Excellent communicator, very positive and patient; made sure my child and i understood what he was teaching and why he was teaching it, very easy to talk to..very knowledgeable.
developed my children's iq and their versatility, my one of my daughters handles and passing increased greatly, and my other daughters shot selection/shooting percentage improved dramaticallyGrate training.
10/10 would recommend. Excellent skill work and player development.
Coach Schwan was very knowledgeable. He helped my daughters develop their skills and got them ready for school ball. A lot of trainers get caught up in flashy moves that don't always translate in live games. I appreciated that Coach Schwan really drilled down in the fundamentals.
