About Andrew

Hi, I’m Andrew :) award-winning teacher at LSE and the University of Cambridge. I’ve taught 400+ students privately and 1m+ students via my online courses — featuring in Forbes 30 Under 30 & winning the LSE Class Teacher Award for “outstanding student feedback”.

Surprisingly, I actually dropped out of school at 16 (!) believing I wasn't “smart enough”…but self-studied my way to the highest grades at A Level (98.2%), LSE (87%), and Cambridge (94.4%) — winning ~£40k in scholarships & 11 academic prizes!

I know EXACTLY what it takes to succeed at the elite level, and I now have 15 years' experience helping students achieve their own successes: many now studying at Oxbridge & Ivy League institutions, winning their own academic prizes along the way :)

I use a full suite of evidence-based learning techniques from educational neuroscience to help my students achieve the best grades possible — from mastery learning to spaced repetition, Socratic questioning, generation, the testing effect, active recall, mnemonics and more.

But it all starts with reverse engineering your exam. As an examiner at LSE & Cambridge and A Level (Edexcel), I know precisely how critical exam technique can be for top grades. Once we understand the mechanics of your exam, scoring 100% is simply following a few well-practised steps on top of solid conceptual understanding.

I also help with coursework projects, dissertations & university applications — I previously ran the UK's largest university admissions support site, helping 40,000+ students, featured in The Telegraph & The Guardian.

Find out more about Andrew

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

When I was 17! I started helping my friends and younger students who couldn't understand maths and economics the way schools teach it. I made it intuitive, using current real world examples, and after seeing the results I was inspired to continue and become the best teacher possible.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach Maths, Economics and Entrepreneurship. I love helping students see the intuition behind academic theories and help wannabe entrepreneurs get off the ground and start the company they've always wanted to build.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I had a lecturer at LSE who taught me about Socratic teaching: instead of telling students that X is the answer, you ask students subtle questions to get them to work out the answer themselves until finally they reach this wonderful "Aha!" moment.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Patience, a deep understanding of cognitive science, the ability to rapidly deconstruct a syllabus and reverse engineer an exam, clarity of communication, and great interpersonal skills.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

With economics, I started off terribly. I didn't get any of the intuition - I just saw lines on a graph and big words. But when I got to see what's behind all the fancy academic pretense, I found a beautiful subject able to capture and model complex human behaviour with immense simplicity.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I have a passion for learning. I've learned chess, portrait art, boxing, chess boxing (yes, this is a real thing!), several languages like Spanish and Tamil; I'm now learning the piano, music production, starting my own podcast - I just love learning new skills.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P) ?

10,000 hours of experience as an award-winning teacher at LSE and private tutor for almost 10 years now! Above that, for whatever reason, I just really care about helping students do well - you'd think I cared more about the exam than they did. And I just love doing things the best way possible - finding optimal revision strategies, solving problems, "hacking" exams - I just love it!
