About Shane
I have been studying classical piano since age 5 and rock/pop/jazz around since age 15. I attended the University of North Texas Jazz Studies program, in addition to studying mathematics and computer science at the University of Colorado. I have had various private students throughout the years while studying music on and off. My passion for music and teaching has drawn me back to my lifelong craft.

I have never taught a group class, but I have always tried to center the teaching around the method I learned from going to Montessori school as a child. The teacher acts as the guide for the student, laying the groundwork such that the student can walk their own path through the material they are learning. The teacher isn't there to teach precisely, but to pose appropriate questions and observations to the student along the way, in order to facilitate learning. In less general terms, I think that ear training is the most important skill in music and I try to establish a good foundation in that realm in the beginning. This will facilitate the student's ability to learn on their own in the future, because their intuitive understanding of the music will be much deeper with a solid foundation in ear training.
